Best interior shutters

The one window covering that is really joinery - fitted to the opening, hinged to the frame, and staying with the house when you leave.

By Janet H. · Last updated November 5, 2026 · How we choose

Three windows in a living room fitted with white louvered interior shutters, the tilted louvers striping sunlight across a timber-clad wall

A shutter is the only thing in this category that behaves like part of the building. A curtain hangs in front of a window; a blind sits inside it and comes out in ten seconds. A shutter is a framed set of louvered panels screwed to the opening, and once it is in, the window has a different shape. That is the appeal, and it is also the reason the decision deserves more care than a pair of panels off a shelf.

It is also the reason this page spends more time on measuring and configuration than on brands. Most shutters sold online are made to the dimensions you supply, which means the main risk is not buying the wrong product - it is buying the right product in the wrong size, with no return available. Everything below is organized around getting that part right first.

Before the list

What a plantation shutter actually is

Horizontal louvers set into a rigid frame, hinged so the whole panel swings open and the louvers tilt independently inside it. That gives you three positions rather than the usual two: panels closed with louvers shut for maximum privacy, panels closed with louvers tilted so light comes in and sightlines are broken, and panels folded back against the wall with the window completely clear. No fabric treatment offers that middle setting, and it is the one most people end up living in.

The word plantation refers only to the wide louver - the style with slats a few inches across rather than the narrow traditional louver of an old exterior shutter. Almost everything sold today for interior windows is effectively a plantation shutter, so the word in a listing title tells you about the look, not about the quality.

Criteria

The five decisions that change the outcome

Made to measure or ready-made, and what each one costs you

This is the fork everything else hangs off. Made-to-measure shutters are built to the width and drop you send the maker, so the frame fills the recess and the result looks fitted. The price of that is a lead time - the listings on this page quote anywhere from around ten days to four or five weeks - and the fact that a measuring mistake is yours. Ready-made shutters come in fixed panel sizes you combine to cover the opening, arrive immediately, and are returnable, at the cost of a less exact fit and a visible gap or filler strip where the stock sizes do not land cleanly on your window.

If you have a standard rectangular window and you are comfortable with a tape measure, made to measure is worth the wait. If the window is an odd shape, if you want to try the look before committing the whole house, or if you simply cannot afford to be wrong, start ready-made.

Material: timber, faux wood, and what a bathroom does to each

Real timber - usually basswood, because it is light for its stiffness - gives the thinnest frames and the lightest panels, which matters on a tall window where weight pulls on the hinges. It also moves with humidity, so it is the wrong choice over a bath or a kitchen sink. Faux wood and composite panels are a wood substrate or a solid polymer with a painted finish: heavier, slightly chunkier in section, and completely indifferent to steam. Several of the listings below describe themselves as waterproof for exactly that reason.

The finish is the other half of the material question. A factory-sprayed white is the standard, and it is what most listings mean when they say a shutter never needs painting. A stained timber finish is available from some makers and reads very differently in a room - closer to furniture than to window hardware. If you have faux wood blinds elsewhere in the house, faux wood vs real wood blinds works through the same material trade in the slatted-blind version, and the conclusions carry over.

Louver width, which is really a view decision

Louvers are sold in a small number of standard widths, generally somewhere between about two and a half and four and a half inches. A narrow louver gives more slats per panel, a busier face, and a slightly smaller stack when the louvers are open. A wide louver gives fewer, bigger slats, a cleaner face, and noticeably more glass visible when they are tilted open, because there is less total louver edge in the way. On a small window a wide louver can look out of scale; on a large one a narrow louver looks fussy. Match the louver to the window, not to a preference formed looking at a photograph of someone else's house.

Tilt rod: on the front, or hidden

A front tilt rod is the vertical bar down the middle of the panel that moves all the louvers together. It is the traditional look, it is easy to operate, and it divides the view. A hidden or rear tilt mechanism puts the linkage behind the louvers, so the face of the panel is uninterrupted and you tilt by moving any single louver by hand. The clean-face version photographs better and usually costs more; the front rod is more robust and easier for children and for anyone who would rather grab a handle than a slat. Several makers list the same shutter in both forms, which is the easiest way to see what the clean face actually costs.

Configuration: full height, cafe height, or tier on tier

Full height is one set of panels covering the whole window, with the louvers tilting as one. Cafe height covers only the lower half, leaving the top of the window permanently bare - the same geometry as a tier curtain, and the right answer for a ground-floor room where the privacy problem is the sidewalk and the daylight is overhead. Tier on tier stacks two independently hinged sets so the top and bottom operate separately; it is the most flexible and the most expensive. Cafe height is the one most people overlook, and it is often the cheapest way to solve a street-facing window - best cafe curtains covers the fabric version of the same idea.

01 — Best overall

Plantation Shutters for interior windows, waterproof, custom sizes

SHUTTER WORKS

Made-to-measure louvered panels built to the dimensions you supply, described by the listing as waterproof - which is what lets one specification cover the whole house instead of changing material for the bathroom.

Who it’s for: A standard window in a house you are staying in, where you want the fitted look and are confident enough with a tape measure to order to your own numbers.

The catch: Built to the dimensions you supply, so a measuring error is expensive and generally not returnable. The quoted make-and-ship window also runs to several weeks, which rules it out for a window you need covered now.

02 — Best ready-made

Classic Solid Faux Wood Interior Shutter, 31Wx32L, four panels

HOME BASICS

A fixed-size faux wood shutter supplied as four hinged panels in a left-left and right-right configuration, in stock and shipping immediately rather than being made to order. The same line is sold in a few other stock sizes.

Who it’s for: Anyone who wants shutters this week, is testing the look on one window before committing the whole house, or has an opening close enough to a stock size that an exact fit is not worth a month of waiting.

The catch: A fixed size will almost never match your opening exactly, so expect a filler strip, a visible margin, or an outside mount to hide the difference. The four-panel split also puts two joints across the window rather than one.

03 — Best clean face

Plantation Shutter for interior windows, hidden tilt rod, custom made

KIFFUN

The same made-to-measure shutter with the tilt linkage moved behind the louvers, so the face of the panel is uninterrupted and you tilt by moving any single slat with your hand.

Who it’s for: A room where the shutter is a piece of the architecture rather than hardware - a living room, a formal dining room, anywhere a bar down the middle of the panel would be the thing you keep noticing.

The catch: A hidden mechanism is the part most likely to loosen over years of use, and it is harder to adjust than a rod you can simply grab. It is also the configuration small children find hardest to operate without bending a louver.

04 — Best for a half window

Cafe Plantation Shutters for interior windows, custom wood

TWOPAGES

A cafe-height shutter in made-to-order wood, covering only the bottom half of the opening. The upper sash stays clear, so the room keeps the daylight a full-height panel would take - and the listing quotes under a week to ship, which is fast for a custom order.

Who it’s for: A street-facing ground-floor room, a kitchen window over a sink, or any window where what actually needs hiding is the lower glass and nothing above it.

The catch: Half a window of coverage is half a window of control: there is nothing to close against low evening sun, and nothing over the top sash at night. A timber panel is also the wrong material directly over a sink or a bath.

05 — Best if you want real timber

Wood Plantation Shutters for interior windows, painted

SHUTTER WORKS

A painted timber build rather than a composite one, offered in a range of whites and grays and made to your measurements. Timber is the route to the thinner frames and lighter panels that matter on a tall or wide opening.

Who it’s for: A dry room - a living room, a study, a bedroom away from the bathroom - where you want the weight and the section of a timber panel rather than a polymer one.

The catch: Timber is the wrong material anywhere humid; it moves, and the joints show it first. This is also the longest lead time of the five, with the listing quoting four to five weeks before it ships.

Buying guide

Getting the order right

Measure the opening, not the glass

For an inside mount, measure the width of the recess at the top, the middle and the bottom, and use the narrowest of the three. Measure the height at the left, the center and the right, and use the longest. Check the depth of the recess too: a shutter frame needs real depth to sit in, and a shallow recess forces an outside mount or a frame that projects into the room. Windows are rarely square, and the three-point measurement is what stops a made-to-measure panel arriving a quarter of an inch too wide to go in. How to measure for blinds walks the same process step by step.

Inside the recess, or a frame on the wall

An inside mount sets the shutter within the window reveal, which is the fitted look everyone is buying shutters for, and it needs enough depth to clear the handles and any vent. An outside mount fixes a frame to the wall around the opening, which is how you deal with a shallow reveal, a very out-of-square window, or a casement handle that fouls the panel. It covers more wall and projects into the room, but it is forgiving. Inside mount vs outside mount sets out how to decide which your window can take.

What a shutter will not do

It will not darken a bedroom. Every louver has a joint at each end and a gap along each edge, and when the louvers close those gaps become a grid of thin bright lines on a sunny morning. Shutters give excellent privacy and very good glare control, and they are the wrong product if the actual requirement is sleeping past dawn. For that, a blackout curtain over the top, or a blackout cellular shade behind, is the honest answer - and plenty of houses run shutters for the daytime with a curtain for the night. If the room is one you sleep in during the day, blackout curtains vs window film covers the only approach that beats both.

They also do comparatively little for heat. A shutter is a rigid panel with room air circulating freely around it, not a sealed layer held against the glass, so it is not in the same conversation as a cellular shade or a lined thermal curtain. Blinds vs shutters and blinds vs shades vs shutters put the three side by side on all of these counts.

Configuration and material carry most of the decision. Brand matters less than either.

Where this page sends you next

If you are still deciding between the categories rather than shopping within one, blinds vs shutters is the direct head-to-head and best window treatments starts further back, with the problem rather than the product. If the shutter look appeals but the price or the permanence does not, best faux wood blinds gets most of the way there for a fraction of the cost and comes down off the wall when you move.

Methodology

How we chose

Selection is on what the listings state and what can be verified from them: panel material, whether the product is made to your measurements or supplied in fixed sizes, tilt-rod type, configuration, stated water resistance, and the make-and-ship time quoted on the listing at the time of writing. Lead times in this category are long and they move, so treat the figures in the spec plates as the listing's own claim rather than a promise. We do not install shutters, we do not lab-test panel materials, and we publish no durability figure of our own. Full criteria on the methodology page.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Are interior shutters worth the money?

On a window you intend to keep as it is, in a house you are staying in, yes - they are the only covering that reads as part of the building, they last far longer than fabric, and the tilted-louver setting gives you privacy and daylight at the same time. On a rental, a window you are undecided about, or a bedroom that has to be genuinely dark, the money is better spent elsewhere.

Do plantation shutters block out light?

No. Closed louvers leave a thin gap along every slat edge and at every joint, so a sunny morning shows as a grid of bright lines rather than darkness. Shutters are a privacy and glare product. If you need to sleep past dawn, run a blackout curtain or a blackout cellular shade with them.

Can you buy interior shutters ready-made?

Yes, in a limited range of fixed panel sizes that you combine to cover the opening. They ship immediately and are returnable, which made-to-measure shutters generally are not. The trade is fit: a stock size rarely matches a real window exactly, so expect a filler strip, a visible margin, or an outside mount.

What louver width should I choose?

Match it to the window. A wide louver shows more glass when tilted open and gives a cleaner face, but it looks out of scale on a small window. A narrow louver suits small openings and period houses and looks fussy on a large modern window. Most ranges sit between roughly two and a half and four and a half inches.

Are faux wood shutters as good as real wood?

In a bathroom or a kitchen they are better - a polymer or composite panel does not swell, warp or delaminate in steam, and several are sold as waterproof. In a dry room real timber wins on weight and on how thin the frame and stiles can be, which matters most on a tall or wide window.

How long do made-to-measure shutters take to arrive?

It varies widely by maker. Among the listings on this page the quoted make-and-ship times run from around ten days to four or five weeks. Treat the figure on the listing as the maker's own claim, check it before ordering, and do not plan around a shutter arriving quickly.
