Best window treatments

There is no single best window treatment. There are five problems, and each one has a covering that solves it and four that do not.

An open-plan living and dining room with beige curtains at a tall window

If you want one answer: a triple-weave blackout curtain such as the NICETOWN Thermal Insulated Blackout Curtains, hung on a rod wider and higher than the window, solves more window problems for more people than anything else you can buy. It darkens, it insulates a little, it fits any window, and it is the only covering you can mount outside the opening to kill edge light.

That is the honest headline, and it is also the reason "best window treatments" lists are usually useless. A curtain cannot aim daylight at a ceiling, cannot be left half open on a solar screen, and does nothing for a bathroom window that needs to be private with the light on. So this page is arranged the other way round: name the problem on your window, then take the covering that was built for it.

Diagnosis

Name the problem before you choose the type

Stand in the room at the hour it annoys you and write down what is wrong. Almost every window complaint is one of five things, and they do not share a solution.

  • Too bright to sleep - the room has to be dark at 5am. You need density plus overlap, which means a curtain or a blackout shade with side channels.
  • Too hot, or too cold - the glass is the uncomfortable surface. You need trapped air at the pane, or reflection outside it.
  • Cannot read the screen - the issue is a hard beam at a particular hour. You need something you can set to any height, or a screen fabric that scatters the beam.
  • Overlooked - a sidewalk, a neighbor's window, a bathroom. You need cover that keeps working after dark, when daylight privacy reverses.
  • Cannot drill - a lease, steel lintels, tile. The fixing decides the product, not the fabric.

If you recognized two problems rather than one, that is normal, and the answer is usually layers: a shade at the glass for the daytime job and a curtain over it for the night-time one. Layering is covered in curtains vs blinds vs shades.

01 — Best if the problem is light

Thermal Insulated Blackout Curtains

NICETOWN

Triple-weave polyester with no coating to crack or peel, machine washable, and sold in a wider ladder of drops than most ranges — including the 108-inch length a near-ceiling rod needs.

Who it’s for: Bedrooms and east-facing rooms. A curtain is the only covering you can mount wider and higher than the window, which is what stops edge light.

The catch: The grommet header holds the panel an inch off the wall with open gaps between grommets, so light still comes over the top. Add a pelmet, or choose a back-tab version, if that is your problem.

02 — Best if the problem is temperature

Cordless Cellular Shades, light filtering

CHICOLOGY

Made-to-size honeycomb that seals against the recess, diffusing daylight into an even glow with no hotspot while insulating the glass behind it.

Who it’s for: Rooms with a cold or baking window, where the covering has to do thermal work rather than just look right.

The catch: Opaque, including the light-filtering fabric — lowering it means losing the view entirely. There is no partial-view position.

03 — Best if the problem is glare

Deluxe Free-Stop Cordless Roller Shades

CHICOLOGY

Pull it to any height and it holds there — which is exactly what a glare problem needs, because you are constantly setting the cover to wherever the sun is.

Who it’s for: Screens, desks and televisions, where the cover gets moved to wherever the sun is two or three times a day.

The catch: Light-filtering fabric diffuses well but is not see-through, so lowering it trades the view for the comfort.

04 — Best if you want to aim the daylight

Basics Cordless Faux Wood Blinds, 2" routeless slats

LEVOLOR

Two-inch faux wood with the lift cords routed out of the slat face, so the blind closes without a column of light pinholes down the middle — the spec that matters if privacy or darkness is the point.

Who it’s for: Living rooms, kitchens and offices that want light without a view in, kept adjustable through the day.

The catch: Faux wood is heavy. Over about 60 inches a single blind gets awkward to raise and loads the brackets; two side by side work better.

05 — Best if the problem is being overlooked

Frosted Glass Window Privacy Film, static cling

rabbitgoo

Non-adhesive frosted film applied with water alone. Because it scatters light physically rather than relying on a brightness difference, it stays private after dark — which mirrored films do not.

Who it’s for: Bathrooms, stairwells, front doors and any window where privacy matters more than the view and nothing should hang in front of the glass.

The catch: Permanent while it is on and not adjustable. It obscures the view day and night until you peel it off.

Before you buy

The three measurements that decide whether any of this works

Rod width, not window width

A curtain rod wants to be the window width plus 8 to 12 inches so the panels stack off the glass and overlap the frame when closed. That overlap is the single most common reason a correctly dense blackout curtain still leaks light - the full arithmetic is in what size curtain rod do I need.

Recess depth, for anything mounted inside

A cellular, roller or slatted blind fitted inside the opening needs the depth its listing states, and it needs the opening to be square. Measure the width at top, middle and bottom and the depth at both sides before ordering: how to measure for blinds walks through it, and taking the narrowest of three widths is the habit that prevents the most returns.

Panel fullness, if you chose fabric

Combined panel width should be 2 to 2.5 times the window width, and 2.5 to 3 times for sheers, or the fabric hangs flat instead of gathering. How many curtain panels do I need turns that into a number for your window.

Methodology

How we chose

We select on published construction and materials, on fitness for the specific problem each pick addresses, on whether the reader described can actually fit the product, and on failure patterns that recur across owner feedback rather than headline scores. We do not lab-test these products and we publish no light-blocking or insulation figure of our own; where a figure appears it is the manufacturer's and is labeled as such. Full criteria on the methodology page.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

What is the best window treatment overall?

For the largest number of real problems, a lined or triple-weave blackout curtain on a rod wider and higher than the window. It is the only covering that can overlap the frame, which is what stops edge light, and it helps with cold and noise as well. It is the wrong answer only when you need to aim daylight through the day or want no hardware at all.

What window treatment is best for energy savings?

Cellular (honeycomb) shades, fitted tightly inside the recess. The trapped air in the cells is the mechanism and the fit is what makes it work - a cellular shade with a half-inch gap at each side is a decorative shade. Exterior shading beats all of them for summer heat, because it stops solar radiation before it reaches the glass.

What is the most popular window treatment right now?

Cordless shades and blinds, across every type - partly on child-safety grounds and partly because cordless lifts have got cheap. We publish no market share figures of our own; what we can say is that cordless is now the default specification on most stock listings rather than an upgrade.

Should I buy curtains or a shade first?

The shade, if the window has a specific daytime job - glare, heat, daytime privacy. The curtain, if the problem is darkness or cold at night. If you expect to end up with both, buy the shade first and size the curtain to go over it, because a curtain can always be mounted outside whatever is already there.

How much should window treatments cost?

We do not publish a price range, because stock sizes and made-to-measure sizes of the same product differ by multiples and prices move weekly. Every pick on this page carries a live price where one is available and a link to the current listing where it is not, so the number you see is the number Amazon shows today.
