Best cafe curtains
Cover the half of the window that is the problem, and keep the half that is the point.
By Janet H. · Last updated October 29, 2026 · How we choose

For most windows the best cafe curtain is the No. 918 Mariela valance and tier set: a complete two-part set in a semi-sheer weave, so the lower sash is covered, the top is finished, and the daylight still arrives over the top. If the window is taller or the sill is low, a 36-inch tier covers more of it than the standard 24-inch pair does.
A cafe curtain solves a specific and very common problem: the part of the window a passerby can actually see through is the bottom half, and the part you want the light from is the top half. Full-length panels treat the whole window as one thing and make you choose. Tiers refuse the choice. That is the entire argument, and it is a good one.

Before the list
What a cafe curtain is
A short panel, usually 24 or 36 inches long, hung on a rod partway up the window rather than above it. The traditional placement is the sash line - the horizontal bar where the two halves of a double-hung window meet - because a curtain that stops exactly there reads as deliberate instead of short. Tiers are nearly always sold in pairs and nearly always have a rod pocket, because they are not meant to be drawn open and closed.
The name comes from European cafes, where the point was to let people eat without being watched from the sidewalk while keeping the room bright. That is still exactly what the product does, and it is why it keeps turning up in kitchens, bathrooms and ground-floor rooms facing a street.
Criteria
The four things that decide a tier
Length, measured from the rod and not from the top
This is the decision people get wrong, because tier lengths are quoted as the panel length, not as a position on your window. Work backward: decide where the hem should land - the sill, or an inch below it - then measure up from there by the panel length you are considering, and that is where the rod goes. A 24-inch tier suits a window where the sash line is low. A 36-inch tier suits a taller lower sash, a basement window, or anywhere you want more coverage. Measure before you buy, not after.
Opacity, and the limit of a semi-sheer
Most tiers are light filtering or semi-sheer, because the whole point is keeping the room bright. That works during the day, when outside is brighter than inside and the fabric reads as opaque from the street. After dark it reverses, the lit room shows through, and a semi-sheer tier gives you much less than you think. If the window is overlooked in the evening, you need an opaque tier, a blind behind it, or film on the lower glass. Privacy at night without losing daylight is the page that works through this properly.
The rod, which is usually the cheapest part of the job
Tiers are light, so they do not need a structural rod. Inside a recess, a tension rod holds a pair of tiers indefinitely and puts no holes in anything - which makes this one of the few window treatments a renter can fit in five minutes. Outside a recess, a slim sash rod on two small brackets is enough. Best tension rods for curtains covers the rod side, and a tension rod that keeps slipping is almost always too short rather than faulty.
Washability, because of where these hang
Cafe curtains live over kitchen sinks and in bathrooms, which means splashes, steam and cooking grease. A machine-washable polyester or poly-linen blend goes in the wash and comes back; a pure linen or a lace tier usually does not tolerate that treatment and will shrink or lose its hand. Given where these hang, washability should outrank fabric snobbery.

Mariela Floral Trim Semi-Sheer Kitchen Curtain Valance and Tiers Set
No. 918
A complete set - a pair of 24-inch tiers plus the matching valance - from one of the few established names in short curtains. Buying the valance with the tiers is what makes the window read as finished rather than half-dressed.
Who it’s for: A standard kitchen or bathroom window where you want the whole arrangement to arrive in one box and look intentional.
The catch: Semi-sheer, so it is a daytime privacy product: with the room lit at night the fabric stops hiding much. The floral trim is also a committed look that will not suit every kitchen.

02 — Best linen look
Hattie Floral Linen Kitchen Tier Curtains, 24 inch
jinchan
A linen-textured tier with a printed floral, light filtering rather than sheer, in the rustic register that suits a farmhouse kitchen or an older house. The texture is what separates it from the flat polyester tiers at the same price.
Who it’s for: Kitchens and dining rooms where the curtain is part of the decoration and not only a privacy fix.
The catch: A linen-look weave shows creases from the packaging more than a smooth polyester does, and needs hanging time or a steam before it sits properly.

03 — Best for a taller lower sash
Faux Linen Textured Kitchen Tier Curtains, 36 inch length
Chyhomenyc
A 36-inch tier rather than the usual 24, which is the length to buy when the sash line is high or the sill sits low and a standard pair would stop embarrassingly short of it.
Who it’s for: Basement windows, tall lower sashes, and any window where you measured and found 24 inches does not reach.
The catch: Inexpensive fabric at an inexpensive price - it filters light and washes well, and it will not hang with the weight of a better panel. Treat it as replaceable.

04 — Best over a sink
Kitchen Tier Cafe Curtains, 24 inch, linen blend
MuseHaus
A linen-blend tier pair in a narrower 28-inch panel width, which suits the small window directly over a sink better than a standard pair that has to be bunched to fit.
Who it’s for: The small awkward window above a kitchen sink, and cottage or galley kitchens where a full-size pair is simply too much fabric.
The catch: The narrow panel width that makes it fit a small window also means it does not have the fabric to gather across anything standard-sized. Check your width before ordering.

05 — Best budget
Faux Linen Textured Short Curtain Tiers, 36 inch length
OVZME
The cheapest honest way to cover a lower sash: a washable faux-linen tier pair in the longer 36-inch length, at roughly the price of a takeout coffee each.
Who it’s for: A basement window, a utility room, a rental you are leaving, or simply finding out whether you like tiers before spending properly.
The catch: Thin fabric, and the texture is printed into a lightweight weave rather than woven in, so it reads as inexpensive up close. It will not outlast a better panel.

Buying guide
What else matters
Fullness, even on a panel this small
A tier needs about twice the window width in fabric to gather properly, same as any curtain. Most tier sets are sold as a pair sized for a standard window, which gets you there on a narrow window and leaves you short on a wide one. On anything over about 45 inches, buy two sets rather than one and accept the overlap - a flat, stretched tier looks like a dish towel on a wire.
The valance, which is optional and usually worth it
Sets often include a short valance for the top of the window. It does nothing for privacy and it is not decoration for its own sake either: it hides the rod and the top of the glass, which is what stops the arrangement reading as an unfinished half-curtain. If you skip it, mount the tier rod precisely at the sash line so the eye reads a line rather than a mistake.
Where tiers beat the alternatives, and where they lose
Against a top-down-bottom-up shade, which does the same geometry with hardware, tiers are a fraction of the price and far easier to fit, but they are fixed - you cannot change your mind during the day. Against frosted film on the lower glass, tiers are reversible and washable where film is permanent and private at night. Top-down-bottom-up vs standard shades and bathroom window privacy options set out both trades.
Rooms where they are the obvious answer
A kitchen window over a sink, where a full-length panel would hang into the wet zone and a blind would collect grease. A ground-floor bathroom with a path outside. A basement window at sidewalk height. A street-facing dining room where you want to see the sky and not the parked cars. The pattern in all four is the same: the problem is the lower glass, and only the lower glass. Window treatments for a kitchen and best curtains for bathroom windows go deeper on two of them.
| If the window is | Buy | Because |
|---|---|---|
| A standard double-hung, sash line low | 24 in tiers | The hem lands at the sill without covering the upper sash |
| Taller, or the sill sits low | 36 in tiers | A 24 in panel would stop short and read as a mistake |
| Overlooked after dark | An opaque tier, or film below | Semi-sheers stop working the moment your light is on |
| Over a sink or in a bathroom | Washable polyester or poly-linen | Splashes, steam and grease are the actual wear |
| Wider than about 45 in | Two sets | One pair stretches flat and loses the gather |
Methodology
How we chose
Selection is on published panel length and width, fabric and weave, stated opacity class, header type, and care instructions - with extra weight on washability, because of where these curtains actually hang. We also weigh the failure patterns owners report for short panels specifically: tiers arriving narrower than the stated pair width, semi-sheers being less private than expected, and hems that do not reach the sill. We do not lab-test fabric and publish no light-transmission figure of our own. Full criteria on the methodology page.
FAQ
Questions people actually ask
What length should cafe curtains be?
Work backward from where the hem should land - usually the sill or an inch below it - and measure up by the panel length to find the rod position. A 24-inch tier suits a standard double-hung with a low sash line; 36 inches suits a taller lower sash, a basement window, or anywhere you want more coverage.
Are cafe curtains private at night?
Most are not. Tiers are usually semi-sheer or light filtering, which reads as opaque from the street during the day only because outside is brighter than inside. With your light on after dark that reverses. For evening privacy you need an opaque tier, frosted film on the lower glass, or a blind behind them.
Where should a cafe curtain rod go?
Traditionally at the sash line - the horizontal bar where the two halves of a double-hung window meet - because a hem that stops exactly there looks deliberate. If your window has no sash line, pick the height that puts the hem at the sill and keep it consistent across the room.
Can you hang cafe curtains without drilling?
Yes, and it is one of the best cases for it. Tiers weigh almost nothing, so a tension rod inside the window recess holds a pair indefinitely with no holes. A tension rod that slips is nearly always too short for the opening rather than defective.
Do you need a valance with cafe curtains?
Not for privacy, but it usually looks better. The valance hides the rod and the top of the glass, which is what stops the arrangement reading as a curtain that fell short. Without one, mount the tier rod precisely at the sash line so the eye reads a deliberate line.
