Best curtains for bathroom windows

Fabric in a wet room is a choice you have to keep making. Here is which fabric survives it, and where a curtain is the wrong answer entirely.

A small bathroom window with a short light curtain

The best curtain for most bathroom windows is a short, washable light-filtering panel — the MRTREES tier curtain is the practical version, covering eye level while leaving the top of the window clear for daylight. The single rule that matters: whatever you hang must go in a washing machine, because a bathroom textile that cannot be washed becomes a problem within a year.

Bathrooms are the room where a curtain is a considered choice rather than a default. Steam condenses on whatever is coldest and nearest the glass, which is your curtain, and damp fabric against a cold pane is how mildew starts. That is an argument for short panels in synthetic or washable blends, hung clear of the glass, in a room you actually ventilate — not an argument against curtains altogether.

Before the list

Decide what the window is for

Bathroom windows almost always have a privacy problem and a light problem that pull in opposite directions. You want the room bright and you do not want to be visible, and the two requirements usually sit at different heights: the sightline is at eye level and the daylight comes from the top of the window. A full-length panel solves privacy by giving up the daylight. A café or tier curtain covering only the lower half solves both at once, which is why it is the standard bathroom answer.

Before you buy fabric at all, check whether your sightline is real. Go outside and look — from the path, from the facing upstairs window, from the yard. A sightline from below is solved by covering the bottom of the window; one from a facing upstairs window needs the top covered instead, which is a different product. Bathroom window privacy options walks through that properly.

The other honest option is to put nothing textile on the window. Privacy film frosts the glass permanently, needs no cleaning beyond the glass itself, and cannot go mildewed. If the window is directly over a bath or shower, that is the answer — see best bathroom window privacy film.

01 — Best overall

Kitchen tier curtains, light filtering voile

MRTREES

Short rod-pocket voile panels that cover the lower half of a window and leave the top clear. Light polyester, so they dry quickly and machine wash without ceremony — the two properties a bathroom textile actually needs.

Who it’s for: The standard bathroom window: a sightline at eye level, daylight you want to keep, and a tension rod inside the recess.

The catch: Thin fabric at a low price. It filters light adequately and will not last the way a heavier panel does — treat it as a few-year item rather than a permanent one.

02 — Best looking

Linen café curtains, short semi-sheer panels

Nanspring

A linen-blend semi-sheer in café lengths — softer and better-looking than a plain voile tier, still washable, and it keeps a small window bright while covering eye level.

Who it’s for: Bathrooms where the window is part of how the room looks, and well-ventilated rooms where fabric is not fighting constant steam.

The catch: Linen blend shows marks more readily than polyester and creases after washing. It is also slower to dry, which is the one property you least want near a shower.

03 — Best for full privacy

Frosted Glass Window Privacy Film, static cling

rabbitgoo

Not a curtain — a static-cling film that frosts the glass itself. It gives complete privacy day and night, passes daylight through, holds no moisture, and cannot go mildewed because there is no textile involved.

Who it’s for: Windows inside a shower enclosure or directly over a bath, and any bathroom where you want the privacy problem solved once rather than managed.

The catch: It is permanent while it is up: you cannot open the view for a bright morning. Static cling needs a clean, smooth pane and will not hold on textured or leaded glass.

04 — Best way to hang it

No Drill Spring Tension Curtain Rod

Amazon Basics

A spring tension rod that fits inside the window recess with no fixings at all, which is what you want in a tiled bathroom where drilling is unwelcome and wall anchors are unreliable.

Who it’s for: Any bathroom window with a recess, and renters who need the fitting to leave no trace.

The catch: Tension rods hold light fabric only, and a wet curtain is heavier than a dry one. Do not hang a lined panel on one, and check the rod is seated on a clean, dry surface — not on tile grout or flaking paint.

Buying guide

What actually matters

Washable, or do not buy it

This is the whole specification. Polyester voiles and cotton-blend tiers go in a machine on a cold wash and come out fine. Lined blackout panels generally cannot, because the liner and the face fabric shrink at different rates and the coating cracks. Linen looks better and creases after every wash. In a bathroom, choose the fabric by its care label first and its appearance second.

Length, and the tub problem

A full-length panel beside a bath will get splashed, will trail on a wet floor, and will stay damp. Short is right in almost every bathroom: a tier curtain covering the lower half, or a single short panel sitting just below the sill. If the window is directly above a tub, keep the fabric clear of the splash zone entirely or use film instead of fabric.

Mounting, with no drilling into tile

Bathroom windows are often set in tiled recesses where drilling is unwelcome and anchors are unreliable. A tension rod inside the recess carries a light tier curtain easily and leaves no trace — see best tension rods for curtains for the weight limits, which matter here because a wet curtain is heavier than a dry one. If you do drill into tile, you need the right anchor and a slow drill, not enthusiasm.

Ventilation does more than any fabric choice

A closed curtain over a closed window after a shower holds damp air against cold glass, which is the condition mildew needs. Open the window or run the extractor afterwards, and leave the curtain pushed clear of the glass rather than drawn across it. That habit matters more than which panel you bought.

When a blind is the better answer

If the window is in the shower enclosure, directly over a bath, or in a room with poor ventilation, a non-porous blind beats any curtain: vinyl, faux wood or a coated roller fabric has nothing for mildew to grow into and wipes clean. Best blinds for bathroom windows is the roundup for that case.

Methodology

How we chose

Selection is on published fabric and care instructions, available lengths suited to a half-height window, mounting method, and the failure patterns owners report in damp rooms specifically. We do not lab-test fabrics for mildew resistance and publish no figure of our own. Methodology.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Can you put curtains in a bathroom?

Yes, provided they are washable and short enough to stay out of the splash zone. The risk is damp fabric held against cold glass, which is how mildew starts, so hang them clear of the pane, ventilate after showers, and wash them occasionally. A window inside the shower enclosure should have film or a blind instead.

What length curtains for a bathroom window?

Short — a tier or café length covering the lower half, or a single panel finishing just below the sill. Full-length panels beside a bath get splashed, trail on a wet floor and stay damp. Short also keeps the top of the window clear, which is where the daylight you want is coming from.

Will bathroom curtains go mildewed?

They can, if they stay damp against the glass. Polyester voiles dry quickly and wash easily, which is why they survive better than linen or anything lined. The behavior matters as much as the fabric: push the curtain clear of the glass and ventilate after a shower.

Curtains or blinds for a bathroom window?

Blinds, if the window is over a bath, inside a shower, or in a poorly ventilated room — vinyl, faux wood and coated roller fabrics are non-porous and wipe clean. Curtains, if the window is away from the water and you want the room to feel less utilitarian.

How do I get privacy without losing the light?

Cover the bottom half of the window and leave the top open. A tier curtain does this with fabric; frosted film across the lower panes does it permanently; a top-down-bottom-up shade does it adjustably. All three keep the daylight that arrives from above.
