Best blinds for bathroom windows

A bathroom window needs privacy at eye level, daylight above it, and a material that does not care about steam. Four that manage all three.

A bathroom window beside a bathtub with a blind fitted inside the recess

The best bathroom blind is a cordless faux wood venetian — the LEVOLOR Basics Cordless Faux Wood Blinds are the pick — because the PVC composite is unaffected by steam and the slats let you block the sightline at eye level while leaving daylight coming in above it. For a top-down-bottom-up version of the same idea, the CHICOLOGY dual-rail cellular shade does it in fabric.

Bathrooms are the one room where privacy and daylight are in direct conflict, because the window is usually small, often the only natural light, and almost always at the exact height someone outside can see through. The product that wins is the one that splits the window — closed where the sightline is, open where the light is — in a material that does not swell.

Before the list

Where the sightline actually is

Go outside and look. From the pavement, from a neighbor's upstairs window, from the garden. Bathroom privacy anxiety is usually about a sightline that only exists from one of those positions, and knowing which one changes the product: a sightline from below is solved by covering the bottom of the window, which leaves the whole top open for light. A sightline from a facing upstairs window needs the top covered instead, and that is a different product.

The second question is material, and bathrooms are strict about it. Humidity cycles between hot-wet and cold-dry several times a day, and that is what destroys real wood, warps paper and eventually marks untreated fabric. Non-porous wins: PVC, vinyl, faux wood composite, coated roller fabric, or glass film which has no absorbency at all.

Basics Cordless Faux Wood Blinds, 2" routeless slats

LEVOLOR

Two-inch faux wood slats on a cordless lift. The PVC composite core does not swell in humidity the way real timber does, the routeless slats have no cord holes to leak light or collect grime, and you can tilt to block the sightline while keeping daylight.

Who it’s for: Most bathroom windows — the best combination of looking like timber, surviving steam, and splitting privacy from light.

The catch: Faux wood is heavy for its size and slats are an open structure, so there is no insulation and the slat edges leak a line of light when closed. A bent slat is permanent.

Top Down Bottom Up Cellular Shades

CHICOLOGY

A cellular shade with two independent rails, so the bottom two-thirds of the window can stay covered against the pavement while the top third is open to the sky. It is the cleanest solution to the bathroom problem of needing privacy and light from the same small window.

Who it’s for: An overlooked bathroom where the window is the only natural light and you do not want to trade one for the other.

The catch: Two rails mean a fiddlier operation and more hardware to keep clean in a damp room, and the light-filtering fabric these come in is not a night-privacy product with the lights on.

Cordless room darkening vinyl blinds

Achim

Plain cordless vinyl mini blinds — completely non-porous, unaffected by anything a bathroom can do to them, and cheap enough to replace rather than restore if they ever do look tired.

Who it’s for: A rental bathroom, a small window behind a bath, or anywhere the blind is going to live in heavy steam and eventually be thrown away.

The catch: It looks like what it costs, and thin vinyl slats take a permanent kink if knocked. On a wide window they bow in the middle.

Frosted Glass Window Privacy Film, static cling

rabbitgoo

A static-cling frosted film applied to the glass itself. It makes the pane permanently translucent — full privacy day and night with nothing to raise, nothing to operate and nothing that can mildew, which in a damp room is a genuine advantage over any fabric.

Who it’s for: A small or awkward bathroom window, a shower window, or a bathroom overlooked from several directions at once.

The catch: It is not reversible by the hour — the view is gone until you peel the film off. Static cling also needs a clean, smooth, flat pane and will not stay on textured or leaded glass.

Buying guide

What actually matters in a bathroom

Privacy at night is a different problem

A blind that gives perfect daytime privacy can fail completely after dark, because the lighting reverses: the room is bright and outside is black, so anything semi-transparent becomes a lit screen. Light-filtering fabrics and solar screens both do this. If the bathroom is used at night and overlooked, you want a room-darkening fabric or closed slats, not a diffusing one. Privacy at night without losing daylight covers the trade.

Which way the slats turn

On a venetian blind this is not cosmetic. Slats turned so the convex side faces up direct the view from outside toward the ceiling; turned the other way they direct it toward the floor and anyone below can see further into the room. For a ground-floor bathroom overlooked from a path, turning them the right way is a free privacy upgrade — the detail is in which way to turn blinds for privacy.

Cordless, and the standing water problem

Beyond the child-safety reason that applies everywhere, a bathroom has a specific one: a hanging cord beside a bath is a cord that ends up wet, and a wet cord picks up mildew along its length. Cordless removes it. If the blind is above the bath itself, cordless also means you are not reaching across water to find a chain.

The no-blind option

Static-cling privacy film deserves a mention here because in a small bathroom it is often the better answer: it makes the glass permanently translucent, so privacy is total and constant with nothing to operate, nothing to clean and nothing that can mildew. The cost is that you lose the view and the ability to change your mind by day. Bathroom window privacy options weighs it against the blinds.

Methodology

How we chose

Moisture tolerance first — nothing porous is listed — then whether the product can separate the sightline from the daylight, then operation within reach of a wet surface. Based on published materials and construction and on the failure patterns owners report in bathrooms specifically: swollen slats, mildewed cords, headrails that rusted. No lab testing. Criteria on the methodology page.

If a blind is not the right type

A blind is one of three categories that suit a bathroom. Best window treatments for bathrooms compares it against film and top-down-bottom-up shades, and says which of the three bathroom windows you have.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

What are the best blinds for a bathroom window?

Cordless faux wood venetians for most bathrooms: the PVC composite shrugs off steam, and tilting slats let you block the sightline at eye level while daylight still comes in above it. Plain vinyl mini blinds do the same job cheaper, and a top-down-bottom-up cellular shade does it in fabric.

Will blinds get moldy in a bathroom?

Non-porous ones will not, which is the whole reason to choose them. Vinyl, faux wood and coated roller fabrics have nothing for mold to grow into if you wipe them occasionally. Real wood, paper and untreated fabric all will, and corded blinds grow it along the cord first.

Can you put wood blinds in a bathroom?

Not real wood. The humidity cycle between a hot shower and a cold room swells the timber and lifts the finish at the slat ends, and there is no repair. Faux wood gives the same appearance in a composite that does not absorb water.

How do I get bathroom privacy without blocking the light?

Cover only the part of the window the sightline passes through. A top-down-bottom-up shade leaves the upper third open; tilted venetian slats direct the view upward; frosted film on the lower pane only leaves the top clear. Go outside first and work out where you are actually visible from.

Are blinds or privacy film better for a bathroom?

Film if privacy is needed constantly and you do not care about the view — it is total, permanent and cannot mildew. Blinds if you want the window open to the view some of the time, or if you rent and want to take the solution with you. Compared in bathroom window privacy options.
