Best blinds for kitchen windows

A kitchen window is a cleaning problem before it is a light problem. Four blinds that wipe down, and the fabrics that do not.

A kitchen window above the sink with a blind raised to let in daylight

The best kitchen blind is a cordless faux wood or vinyl slat you can wipe — the LEVOLOR Basics Cordless Faux Wood Blinds are the pick for a window near a sink, and the Achim cordless vinyl blinds for a tight budget or a very wet spot. Both are chosen on cleanability first, because that is what actually decides how a kitchen blind ages.

Kitchens break the normal rule that fabric wins. Steam from a kettle, spatter from a pan and the fine airborne grease every kitchen produces all land on the window covering nearest them, and fabric holds all three. Within a year a fabric shade over a hob is darker at the bottom than the top and cannot be washed back. Wipeable beats washable here, and that single criterion reorders the whole category.

Before the list

Where the blind sits changes the answer

Measure the distance from the window to the hob and the sink before you shop. Directly over a hob: hard surfaces only — vinyl or faux wood — and short, because a long blind is in the splash zone. Over a sink: splashes rather than grease, so faux wood is fine and real wood is not, since repeated wetting swells and delaminates it. Across the room from both: you have the full range, and a cellular shade or a café curtain becomes reasonable.

The second kitchen-specific factor is reach. A blind above a deep counter or a sink is operated at arm's length over a wet surface, which rules out anything fiddly. A cordless shade you push up with one hand is easier to live with than a chain you have to lean across the sink to find, and there is no cord to dangle into standing water.

Basics Cordless Faux Wood Blinds, 2" routeless slats

LEVOLOR

Two-inch faux wood slats on a cordless lift, with routeless slats so there is no row of cord holes to collect kitchen grime. The PVC composite core is unaffected by steam or splashing and wipes clean with ordinary kitchen spray.

Who it’s for: The window over or beside a sink in most kitchens — the best balance of looking like timber and behaving like plastic.

The catch: Faux wood is heavier than aluminum or vinyl, so a wide kitchen window makes for a hefty blind to raise one-handed over a counter. Slats are an open structure, so no insulation.

Cordless room darkening vinyl blinds

Achim

Plain cordless vinyl mini blinds: the cheapest genuinely wipeable option, completely non-porous, and light enough to raise with one hand from across a worktop.

Who it’s for: A window directly over a hob, a utility area, a rental kitchen, or any spot where the blind will eventually be thrown away rather than restored.

The catch: It looks like what it costs. Thin vinyl slats also take a permanent kink if something knocks them, and on a wide window they bow visibly in the middle.

Snap-N-Glide Cordless Roller Shades

CHICOLOGY

A cordless roller shade in a solar-screen fabric, which is a woven mesh rather than a soft textile — it cuts glare and the sightline while keeping the view, and being a coated weave it sponges clean rather than absorbing.

Who it’s for: A kitchen with a view worth keeping, or a window that takes hard afternoon sun onto a worktop you work at.

The catch: Solar screen keeps the view in both directions after dark, so it is not a privacy answer at night with the kitchen lights on. The roll is also a dust ledge when the shade is up.

04 — Best half-height alternative

Kitchen tier curtains, light filtering voile

MRTREES

Short light-filtering tier panels that cover the lower half of the window on a small rod, leaving the top open. The only fabric we would put in a kitchen, because it hangs clear of the splash zone and goes in the washing machine when it does get marked.

Who it’s for: A kitchen window where the point is daylight and view, with a privacy problem only at counter height.

The catch: It covers half the window, so it is not a light-control product at all, and over time it will still pick up airborne grease — the saving grace being that you can wash it.

Buying guide

What actually matters over a counter

Material, in order of survival

Vinyl and PVC slats are the most forgiving — non-porous, unaffected by water, cleanable with any kitchen spray. Faux wood is next and looks considerably better: a PVC or composite core that will not swell, in a finish that reads as timber. Real wood belongs in a dining room, not over a sink. Aluminum mini blinds clean well but dent and the dents are permanent. Fabric cellular and roman shades are the last choice near cooking, however good they look on day one.

Light, and the one job the kitchen blind has at night

Kitchens rarely need darkness, which is freeing. What they do need is to stop being a lit display case after dark — a kitchen window at 9pm with the lights on shows the room completely from the street. A slatted blind closed, or a light-filtering shade, handles that. If it is a ground-floor window onto a path, which way to turn blinds for privacy matters more than it sounds.

Length, and the handle you forgot

Kitchen windows frequently have a tilt-and-turn or casement handle sitting proud of the frame, and a recess-mounted blind has to clear it. Check the handle's projection against the headrail depth before ordering, and if it will not clear, mount outside the recess instead. Sill length rather than below the sill on anything above a counter, so the blind is not resting in whatever is on the worktop.

Half-height alternatives

If the kitchen window is about the view and the light, a café or tier curtain covering only the bottom half solves the privacy problem while leaving the top open and well clear of the hob. It is the only fabric answer we would put in a kitchen, because it can go in the washing machine and it hangs away from the splash zone.

Methodology

How we chose

Cleanability and water tolerance first, then operation within reach of a wet counter, then light control. Selected on published materials and construction and on the failure patterns owners report in kitchens specifically — swollen timber, yellowed vinyl, fabric that grayed from the bottom up. No lab testing. Criteria on the methodology page.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

What are the best blinds for a kitchen window?

Cordless faux wood beside a sink, cordless vinyl directly over a hob. Both are non-porous and wipe clean with kitchen spray, which is the criterion that decides how a kitchen blind looks after two years of steam and spatter.

Can you put real wood blinds in a kitchen?

Not over a sink or a hob. Repeated wetting and steam swell the timber and lift the finish at the slat ends, and there is no repair. Faux wood gives you the same appearance in a PVC composite that water does not affect.

Are fabric shades a bad idea in a kitchen?

Near cooking, yes. Fabric absorbs the airborne grease every kitchen produces, and a cellular or roman shade over a hob will be visibly darker at the bottom within a year with no way to wash it. Across the room from the hob, fabric is fine.

How do you clean kitchen blinds?

Wipe each slat with warm water and a little dish soap, which cuts cooking grease better than a general-purpose spray, then dry. Monthly is enough to stop grease building into a film that no longer wipes off. More in how to clean blinds.

Should kitchen blinds be inside or outside mounted?

Inside the recess if the window handle clears the headrail — check the handle's projection first. Outside mount if it does not, or if the recess is too shallow for the headrail to sit flush.
