Comparison

Blinds vs shutters

Same directional control, wildly different commitment. One is hardware, the other is joinery.

By Janet H. · Last updated September 23, 2026 · How we choose

White plantation shutters fitted to an interior window

Shutters are rigid louvred panels fixed to the window frame — effectively joinery. Blinds are slats on a headrail that you hang and can take down. Both give you directional light control by tilting louvres, and that is where the similarity ends.

Shutters cost several times what blinds do, need measuring and fitting, and become part of the building. Blinds are hardware you buy, hang, and replace when they wear out. The question is whether permanence is worth paying for on your window.

Deciding

Choose blinds if…

  • You rent, or expect to move within a few years.
  • Budget matters, or you are covering a whole house at once.
  • You want the option to raise the covering fully and clear the glass — shutters only fold back against the reveal.
  • The window is an odd shape and custom joinery would be expensive.
  • You want to be able to change your mind.

Deciding

Choose shutters if…

  • You own the house and intend to stay.
  • You want a permanent, built-in look that reads as part of the architecture.
  • The window is in a high-traffic spot where a blind would be knocked and bent.
  • You want a covering that lasts decades rather than years.
  • Insulation matters a little — a solid panel across the opening does more than slats on a rail.

What changes

The cost and effort reality

The gap is large and not close. Shutters are a measured, made-to-order, fitted product, frequently installed professionally, and the price reflects all three. Blinds are hung with a screwdriver in ten minutes.

What shutters give back over time is durability and the absence of replacement cost. A vinyl blind in a busy room might be replaced twice a decade; shutters outlast the decor around them. Whether that maths works depends almost entirely on how long you will be there.

Blinds that come closest are in best window blinds and best blinds for privacy.

01Closest to shutters

Basics Cordless Faux Wood Blinds, 2" routeless slats

LEVOLOR

Two-inch white faux wood slats give much of the visual weight and the clean louvred look of shutters, with routeless construction so they close properly. A fraction of the cost and removable.

Who it’s for: Anyone drawn to the shutter look who is not ready for the shutter price or permanence.

The catch: Still a blind — a headrail at the top, cords inside, and slats that can bend. It approximates the look rather than matching it.

2" Faux Wood Blinds with crown valance

Arlo Blinds

The crown valance conceals the headrail, which is the single detail that most gives a blind away as a blind. It gets closer to the built-in look than an exposed headrail ever will.

Who it’s for: Rooms where the window covering is meant to look deliberate and architectural.

The catch: The valance adds depth at the top — check the recess before planning an inside mount.

Achim

If the point is simply covering a window cheaply while you decide whether shutters are worth it one day, this does the job for very little.

Who it’s for: Rentals and interim solutions.

The catch: Thin slats bend, and once bent they leave a permanent gap. Not a shutter substitute in any visual sense.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Are shutters worth the extra cost over blinds?

If you own the house and plan to stay, often yes — they last decades, look built-in, and generally help rather than hurt at resale. If you rent or expect to move soon, the maths rarely works.

Do shutters insulate better than blinds?

Somewhat. A solid panel fitted across the opening reduces air movement more than slats on a headrail. Neither approaches a cellular shade, which traps air against the glass specifically to insulate.

Can you get the shutter look without the cost?

Reasonably close. Two-inch white faux wood blinds with a crown valance to hide the headrail give much of the same clean louvred effect, and you can take them with you when you move.

Do shutters block light better than blinds?

Slightly, because there are no lift-cord route holes and the panels close against the frame. Neither gives true blackout — for that you need a continuous covering that overlaps the opening.

Are shutters harder to clean?

No, easier. There are far fewer louvres than a blind has slats, they are rigid so you can wipe firmly without bending anything, and there are no cords collecting dust.
