Best zebra shades for daylight and daytime privacy
The one covering that tunes between a filtered view and a covered window — plus the honest limit on how dark any of them get.
By Janet H. · Last updated October 1, 2026 · How we choose

A zebra shade exists for one specific window: the one where you want the daylight and you do not want the audience. A sidewalk-facing living room at 11am. A kitchen that looks straight into the neighbor's kitchen. A home office where the glare is bad for two hours and the view is worth keeping for the other six. Most coverings make you pick one state and live with it. A zebra shade lets you slide between them with one pull.
It does that with two fabric layers that each carry alternating sheer and solid bands, joined into a loop and wrapped around a single roller tube. Move the shade and one layer travels past the other. Line the solid bands up over the sheer ones and the window is covered. Offset them and daylight comes through the sheer gaps in horizontal stripes. Roll the whole thing up and you have a bare window. The control is continuous, not three settings.
The thing the listings will not tell you plainly: a zebra shade is a light-control product, not a darkness product. The sheer bands are sheer at every position. Buy one expecting a blackout result and you will be disappointed at 5am — which is a different problem with a different answer.

Before the list
Light filtering, room darkening, blackout
Zebra fabric is sold in three opacity families, and the label refers to the solid band only. The sheer band is sheer in all three.
- Light filtering — the solid band diffuses rather than covers. Daylight stays generous, glare softens, the room never feels gloomy. Right for living rooms, kitchens and most home offices.
- Room darkening — a denser solid band that visibly dims the room and gives better evening privacy. The usual choice for a bedroom where total darkness is not the goal.
- Blackout — the solid band is blackout fabric. It is the darkest version available, and it is still not a blackout shade, because the sheer bands and the edges keep passing light.
Factory Direct Blinds puts the limit plainly in its own buying guidance: a blackout zebra shade rarely creates the same effect as a single-panel blackout roller shade, because light gaps remain at the headrail and down the sides of the window, particularly on an inside mount, and a cassette valance reduces that halo without removing it. That matches how the product is built. No arrangement of bands closes the gap between fabric and frame.
The cassette is not a trim upgrade
On a bare-roll zebra shade the tube sits exposed at the top of the window and daylight escapes over it as a bright line. A cassette — also sold as a valance headbox — encloses the tube and cuts that glow. It is the single upgrade most worth paying for if the shade is going in a bedroom, and it is why several of the picks below carry one.
It costs you depth. Graywind publishes the numbers for its cassette: 3 inches high by 2 7/8 inches deep, an inside-mount window depth requirement of 1 7/8 inches, and a note that on a frame shallower than 2 3/4 inches the valance will project past the frame. Measure the recess before you choose a mount; inside mount vs outside mount covers what that trade changes.

Free-Stop Cordless Zebra Roller Shades
CHICOLOGY
The straightforward version of the format, done properly: cordless free-stop lift, room-darkening dual-layer fabric, ready-made widths you can order and hang the same week. CHICOLOGY also lists the same construction in a premium made-to-measure line with a blackout band, so you can step up later without changing brand or look.
Who it’s for: The default for a living room, kitchen or home office window where you want daylight most of the day and cover when someone walks past.
The catch: Room darkening is the ceiling on the ready-made line — the sheer bands keep passing light at every position, so this dims a room rather than darkening it. Fixed widths also mean you size to the nearest listed option rather than to your window.

02 — Best for a bedroom
Blackout Cordless Zebra Blinds with cassette
Persilux
A free-stop cordless zebra built around an enclosed cassette headrail, which is the part that matters in a bedroom: it covers the tube and kills the bright line an open roll leaves across the top of the window. Persilux states 90% blackout for the fabric, sells it in ready-made sizes plus a custom-size listing, and the line is carried at Lowe's as well as Amazon.
Who it’s for: A bedroom or street-facing room where you want the room meaningfully dimmer and tidier at the top, without going to curtains.
The catch: The 90% figure is the maker's claim for the fabric, not a measurement at your window. The sheer bands and the side gaps of an inside mount still pass light, so treat this as the darkest zebra shade available rather than as a blackout shade.

03 — Best for an odd-sized window
Cut-to-Size Zebra Roller Blinds
Keego
Made to your measurements to 1/8 inch, in light-filtering or blackout bands, with cordless and corded lifts listed separately. Keego also sells a no-drill version of the same shade, which is the one to look at if the window is in a rental and the frame cannot take brackets.
Who it’s for: Any window that is not a standard width — older houses, bay returns, anything where a ready-made shade would leave a visible stripe down one side.
The catch: A made-to-measure order puts the measuring risk entirely on you, and it is not a shade you can trim at home afterwards: the tube, fabric and bottom rail are cut as one assembly. The order also goes through a size-confirmation step before production, so it is not a this-week purchase.

04 — Best value
Cordless Zebra Blinds, free-stop
Changshade
The affordable way to find out whether you actually like the format. Light-filtering dual-layer fabric on a cordless free-stop lift, in a long list of ready-made widths from narrow to wide at a 72-inch drop, with a linen-look fabric option and a custom-size route if the stock sizes miss.
Who it’s for: Renters, and anyone covering several windows in one room where custom shades across the whole wall would be the expensive mistake.
The catch: The ready-made line is light filtering only, so it is a daylight-and-privacy tool rather than a darkness one, and stock sizing means an approximate fit. Expect to mount outside the recess if your window falls between the listed widths.

05 — Best motorized
Motorized Zebra Blinds
Yoolax
A made-to-measure zebra shade on a motor, with remote, app and voice control through Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home depending on the motor chosen, and rechargeable or hardwired power. Band position is where motorization earns its money — you nudge the offset from the sofa as the sun moves instead of getting up to the window.
Who it’s for: A window you cannot comfortably reach, or a room where you would genuinely use scheduling rather than setting the shade once in March and forgetting it.
The catch: It is several times the cost of a manual shade, and the order is made to measure with an email confirmation of your size before production, so plan on waiting. A rechargeable motor needs recharging; a hardwired one needs power at the window.

06 — Best for a wide window
Motorized Zebra Blinds, Classic series
Graywind
The one with the published size envelope: Graywind's Classic series is customizable from 20 to 109 inches wide — some fabric colors cap at 101 — and 21 to 120 inches tall, with a 3 inch by 2 7/8 inch cassette and a stated 1 7/8 inch inside-mount depth requirement. That range covers a patio slider or a picture window as a single shade rather than two.
Who it’s for: Wide openings and tall glass, where ready-made shades run out of width and two narrower shades would leave a seam down the middle of the view.
The catch: Motorized only — there is no manual version of this shade, so the motor cost is not optional. The valance projects past a frame shallower than 2 3/4 inches, and Graywind's own lead time runs to roughly 8 to 11 days delivered after the size confirmation.

Buying guide
What actually matters
Free-stop, chain or motor
Free-stop is the cordless mechanism you want on a zebra shade. Pull it to any height and it stays there, which matters more here than on a plain roller because the band offset — the whole point of the product — changes with position. A mechanism that snaps back to fixed stops fights you every time.
Continuous-loop chains give finer control on a heavy shade and are common on wide made-to-measure units, but they put a cord back on the wall, so keep them away from rooms children use. Motors are the premium option, and on a window you physically cannot reach — above a stairwell, behind a sofa, at the top of a tall slider — they are the only version that gets used daily rather than left down all winter.
Ready-made or cut to size
Ready-made zebra shades come in fixed widths and are the cheap, fast route: order today, hang it this week. The compromise is fit. A roller shade that is an inch narrow leaves an uneven stripe of daylight down one side, and against a banded fabric that stripe is more obvious than it would be on a plain one. If your window falls between listed sizes, mount outside the recess and overlap the frame rather than accepting the gap.
Cut-to-size changes both the economics and the timeline. Keego builds to 1/8 inch. Yoolax and Graywind both email to reconfirm your measurements before anything is made — Graywind quotes 3 to 4 days of production after that confirmation and 8 to 11 days to your door. None of these is a same-week fix, and all of them put the measuring risk on you. Measure twice against how to measure for curtains, which covers the recess measurements a shade order needs too.
The roll is thicker than you expect
Two fabric layers wrap the same tube, so a zebra shade rolls up fatter than a single-layer roller of the same width. On a shallow recess that is the difference between an inside mount that clears the frame and one that sits proud of the opening or fouls the handle. Check the stated depth requirement on the listing rather than assuming a roller is a roller.
Night privacy is where people get caught out
During the day a closed zebra shade reads as solid from the street, because outside is brighter than inside. After dark with your lamps on, the brightness gradient reverses and silhouettes show through the sheer bands. This is not a defect in a particular product — it is true of sheers, solar screens and every light-filtering fabric, and it catches someone out every week.
If the window faces a sidewalk and you use the room in the evening, plan a second layer from the start: a curtain on a rod in front of the shade, closed only at night. Privacy at night without losing daylight lays out the options and what each one costs you.
Where a zebra shade is the wrong answer
| If your problem is | A zebra shade gives you | Better answer |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeping past sunrise | A dimmer room with bright bands and edge leaks | Blackout curtain liners |
| A cold window in winter | Almost nothing — thin fabric on an open tube | Insulated cellular shades |
| Glare on a screen at one specific hour | A workable fix, at more cost than you need to spend | A solar-screen roller shade |
| A rental where you cannot drill | A product that normally needs brackets on the frame | No-drill blinds and shades |
| Privacy after dark in a lit room | Visible silhouettes through the sheer bands | An opaque layer in front |
Cleaning
A zebra shade carries more fabric surface than a plain roller, and the horizontal bands hold dust where you can see it. Dry dusting or a vacuum brush attachment on a low setting is the routine maintenance; the fabric is not something to scrub or soak. Same principle as every soft shade — how to clean blinds covers the slatted version of this problem.
The motorized versions
Two of the shades above are sold motorized, and band position is the control that benefits most from a remote — you nudge the offset from the sofa as the sun moves. Best smart blinds covers the motors, the power options and what they cost.
Methodology
How we chose
Every product below was checked as currently sold before it was written about. Selection is on published opacity family, lift mechanism, cassette or bare roll, stated size range, and whether the shade is ready-made or made to measure — the specifications that decide whether it fits your window and behaves the way the page promises. We do not test light transmission and we do not repeat a manufacturer's shading percentage as if it were our own measurement; where a figure appears it is attributed to whoever published it. Methodology has the full standard, and the prices on this page are read from Amazon and refreshed daily, each shown with the date it was read.
FAQ
Questions people actually ask
Are zebra shades blackout?
No, including the ones sold as blackout. The label describes the solid bands; the sheer bands stay sheer, and light still enters at the headrail and down the sides of an inside mount. A cassette reduces the glow at the top. If you need a dark room, an opaque covering mounted outside the recess is the product — see best blackout curtain liners.
Can people see in through zebra shades at night?
Yes, as silhouettes, once your lights are on and it is dark outside. Daytime privacy is good because outside is brighter than inside; after dark that reverses. A street-facing room used in the evening needs a second, opaque layer.
Zebra shade or roller shade?
A plain solar-screen roller if the problem is glare at a known hour and you want the cheapest effective fix — you lower it to the height of the beam. A zebra shade if the same window also needs daytime privacy, because you can cover the glass and keep daylight at the same time. Picks for the plain version are in best roller shades.
Do zebra shades insulate?
Barely. It is thin fabric on an open or lightly enclosed tube, with none of the trapped-air structure that makes a cellular shade work. If a cold window is the real complaint, start at best insulated cellular shades.
Can you fit a zebra shade without drilling?
Some brands sell a no-drill version that braces inside the recess — Keego lists one. The standard product mounts on brackets screwed to the frame or wall. Renter-safe options across the whole category are in no-drill blinds and shades.
How do you clean a zebra shade?
Dust it, do not wash it. A vacuum brush attachment on a low setting or a dry microfiber cloth along the bands is the routine; the dual fabric and the printed bands do not respond well to scrubbing or soaking.
