There is a whole category of window shade designed to be trimmed to width at home and clipped into the frame with nothing but your hands. No drill, no brackets, no anchors, no landlord conversation. For a rental it is the fastest route from bare window to functioning room, and it costs less than almost anything else in window treatments.

The trade is lifespan. These are consumable products: paper creases, adhesive clips lose grip, and repeated raising and lowering wears them out. Think in terms of a couple of years rather than a decade, and price them accordingly — which, at this end of the market, is easy to do.

What "no drill" actually means here

Three different mechanisms get described the same way. Clip-in shades hold with small adhesive or friction clips inside the frame — genuinely no tools. Tension-fit shades press against the recess sides like a tension rod. Applied solutions — film, static cling — stick to the glass itself and need no mounting at all.

The applied option is the one people forget and it is often the best fit for a rental: nothing to fall down, nothing to remove at move-out beyond peeling it off, and it does not interfere with opening the window.

A cordless pleated paper shade that you trim to width with scissors and clip into the frame by hand. The manufacturer states it blocks 99% of light, and the paper is made not to yellow or crack in sun. It is the fastest way to make a rental window functional.

Who it’s for: New rentals, rooms being set up, anywhere you need the window covered this week rather than next month.

The catch: It is paper. It creases along the pleats, it does not enjoy being raised and lowered several times a day, and it will not look crisp after a couple of years. Budget to replace rather than repair.

02 — Best proper shade

Cordless Cellular Shades

CHICOLOGY

A real fabric cellular shade rather than a temporary one. It needs brackets, which means small screws — but the brackets are tiny and the holes are inside the frame where a dab of filler closes them at move-out, and it insulates and looks like a permanent fitting.

Who it’s for: Longer tenancies, and renters whose lease permits small fixings inside the window recess.

The catch: Not strictly no-drill — brackets need fixing. If your lease is absolute about fixings, this is off the table and the paper shade is your answer.

03 — Best adjustable option

Who it’s for: Living rooms and bedrooms in rentals where you want more than a paper shade but not a made-to-measure order.

The catch: Stock sizing means an approximate fit, and on a roller an approximate fit shows as an uneven gap down one side. Measure carefully and consider mounting outside the recess.

Applied to the glass with water alone, holds by static cling, peels off with no residue, and repositions while you get it straight. Nothing to mount, nothing to fall down, and the window still opens normally.

Who it’s for: Bathrooms, ground-floor windows and any rental where you want privacy with literally no hardware.

The catch: Permanent while it is on and not adjustable — it obscures the view day and night. Wrong for a living room, right for a bathroom.

Living with them

Measure, then trim, then fit

Cut-to-size shades are supplied oversized and you trim them at home. Measure the recess width in three places and cut to the narrowest. Cut a little generously on the first attempt — you can always take more off, and a shade trimmed a quarter-inch too narrow is a shade with a permanent light gap.

Expect edge light

Everything in this category mounts inside the frame, which means it cannot overlap it, which means light at all four edges. If the room needs to be dark, the shade handles the glass and a curtain on a tension rod handles the edges. One layer will not do it.

Keep the offcut and the packaging

Two practical reasons. First, if a landlord asks you to remove a shade, having the original box makes it a tidier conversation. Second, shades are sometimes an upgrade the landlord would rather keep — but only if they look deliberately fitted rather than improvised.

Questions people actually ask

Can I put blinds up in a rental without drilling?

Yes. Cut-to-size pleated shades trim to width with scissors and clip into the frame with no tools at all. For privacy with no hardware whatsoever, static-cling film on the glass works and leaves no trace.

Do no-drill shades block light properly?

Across the glass, yes — one manufacturer states 99% for its blackout paper shade. At the edges, no: anything inside-mounted leaves a light outline on all four sides. For real darkness add a curtain in front.

How long do paper shades last?

A year or two of daily use before the pleats look tired. They are cheap enough to treat as consumable, which is part of the appeal in a place you may not stay long.

How do I cut a shade to size?

Measure the recess width at the top, middle and bottom and cut to the narrowest. Cut a little generously first — you can always take more off, and a shade trimmed too narrow has a permanent gap.

Will the landlord mind?

Most will not, and many prefer a window that is covered. Clip-in shades and static-cling film leave no marks at all. If your lease bans fixings outright, stick to those two rather than anything needing brackets.
