For evening privacy nothing beats an opaque panel drawn across the glass. It is completely effective, it costs less than any fitted alternative, and it works at whatever hour you choose. The problem with curtains as a privacy product is not effectiveness — it is that they are binary. Open, and you have no privacy. Closed, and you have no window.

So the useful question is not "which curtain is most private" — almost any lined panel stops a silhouette. It is "which curtain will I actually be happy to have closed", because a privacy curtain that makes the room feel like a cave gets left open and stops being a privacy product at all.

What stops a silhouette

At night, with a lamp on behind it, a surprising number of curtains show a clear outline of anyone moving past. The fabric properties that prevent it are opacity and weight: a lined or triple-weave panel stops light dead, while a single-layer cotton or a light polyester glows and silhouettes.

The quick test is the same one used for blackout: hold the fabric up to a bright lamp. If the bulb's shape is visible, a person's shape will be too. If you see nothing, you are fine.

Color matters less than people assume. A pale lined curtain is more private than a dark unlined one, because it is the layer count that blocks the light rather than the shade of the face fabric.

Getting the setup right

Width, and the gap in the middle

For privacy the gap that matters most is where two panels meet. They need to overlap by several inches, not just touch — panels settle and separate, and a vertical slit at eye level in a lit room is the most exposing gap there is. Combined panel width of at least 2 to 2.5 times the window, and an overlapping track if you want to be certain.

Layering, so you're not choosing between privacy and daylight

The standard fix for the binary problem is two layers: sheers or a light-filtering shade for the day, an opaque panel for the evening. A double rod carries both on one set of brackets. This is more effort and more cost than one curtain, and it is the difference between a room that works at every hour and one that does not.

Where curtains beat everything else

Awkward openings. A bay, an arch, a window with no usable recess, a wall of glass, a room divider — curtains handle geometry that fitted shades either cannot cover or cover at enormous cost. If the window is not a plain rectangle, start here rather than with a shade.

Can people see through curtains at night?

Through unlined or lightweight ones, yes — they glow with the lights on and show a clear silhouette. A lined or triple-weave panel stops light entirely. Hold the fabric to a lamp: if you can see the bulb's shape, a person's shape will show too.

What's the most private curtain fabric?

Anything opaque with more than one layer — a triple weave or a lined panel. Layer count matters far more than color or material, and a pale lined curtain is more private than a dark unlined one.

How do I stop the gap between my curtain panels?

Make sure they overlap by three to four inches rather than meeting edge to edge, which means more total panel width than most people buy. Magnetic curtain clips or an overlapping track hold the join closed if buying more panel is not an option.

Curtains or blinds for privacy?

Blinds for adjustable daytime privacy, because you can aim the slats. Curtains for complete evening privacy and for awkward openings a fitted blind cannot cover. Most overlooked rooms end up with both.

Do I need blackout curtains for privacy?

Not necessarily — you need opaque, which is a lower bar. Any lined panel stops a silhouette. Blackout fabric does the same job and also darkens the room, which you may or may not want.
