Best smart blinds

A motor is worth paying for on a window you cannot reach or a schedule you would really use. Everywhere else it is an expensive remote.

By Janet H. · Last updated October 11, 2026 · How we choose

A living room with motorized shades lowered across a wall of windows

For most rooms the best smart blind is the Yoolax Motorized Zebra Blind: made to your measurements, rechargeable or hardwired, and controlled by remote, app or voice. It is the pick for the reader who wants one motorized shade on one awkward window and does not want to rewire anything to get it. If you already own decent horizontal blinds, skip the whole category and clip a SwitchBot Blind Tilt onto the wand instead — it motorizes the tilt you actually use for a fraction of the price.

Smart blinds are the one window-treatment category where the honest answer depends more on the window than on the product. A motor on a shade you can reach from the sofa is a novelty you will stop using by March. A motor on a shade above a stairwell, behind a kitchen sink, or on a twelve-foot wall of glass is the difference between a covering you adjust daily and one that sits in whatever position it was left in last summer.

Before the list

Decide what you are automating

Two genuinely different products are sold as smart blinds and they solve different problems. A motorized shade replaces the whole covering: the motor lives inside the roller tube or the headrail and it raises and lowers the fabric. A retrofit tilt motor clamps onto the wand of horizontal blinds you already own and turns the slats. If your problem is darkness, only a motorized shade will do. If your problem is glare and privacy on venetian or faux wood blinds, the retrofit does the job for a fraction of the money and leaves the blind intact — which also makes it the only version a renter should consider.

The second decision is power, and it is the one people regret. A rechargeable motor means getting a cable to the shade every few months — fine at eye level, miserable on the window that justified the motor in the first place. A solar panel stuck to the glass solves that, but only on a window with real direct sun. A hardwired motor never needs charging and needs an outlet at the window you probably do not have. Choose the power source before you choose the fabric.

The third is the ecosystem. Nearly every motor speaks Bluetooth out of the box and needs a bridge or hub before Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home can see it. Newer motors ship with Matter over Thread, which drops the brand hub and lets the shade join the same border router as the rest of your devices. If you already run a smart home, buy for the protocol rather than the brochure.

Motorized Zebra Blinds

Yoolax

A made-to-measure zebra shade on a motor, with remote, app and voice control through Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home depending on the motor chosen, and rechargeable or hardwired power. Band position is where motorization earns its money — you nudge the offset from the sofa as the sun moves instead of getting up to the window.

Who it’s for: A first motorized shade on one awkward window, with no rewiring, in a format that handles glare and privacy from the same shade.

The catch: It is several times the cost of a manual shade, and the order is made to measure with an email confirmation of your size before production, so plan on waiting. A rechargeable motor needs recharging; a hardwired one needs power at the window.

02 — Best for blinds you already own

Blind Tilt retrofit motor

SwitchBot

A clip-on motor that drives the tilt wand of horizontal blinds you already have, with a rechargeable battery, an optional solar panel and a light sensor that can hold the slats at a set brightness. Installation is tool-free and reversible, so nothing about the existing blind changes.

Who it’s for: Anyone with usable venetian, faux wood or vinyl blinds who wants scheduling and voice control without replacing the covering — and renters, because nothing is drilled or cut.

The catch: It tilts the slats; it does not raise or lower the blind. That makes it a glare and privacy tool, not a darkness one. Voice assistants need a separate SwitchBot hub, and it only fits wand-operated horizontal blinds.

03 — Best for a wide window

Motorized Zebra Blinds, Classic series

Graywind

The one with the published size envelope: Graywind's Classic series is customizable from 20 to 109 inches wide — some fabric colors cap at 101 — and 21 to 120 inches tall, with a 3 inch by 2 7/8 inch cassette and a stated 1 7/8 inch inside-mount depth requirement. That range covers a patio slider or a picture window as a single shade rather than two.

Who it’s for: Wide openings and tall glass, where ready-made shades run out of width and two narrower shades would leave a seam down the middle of the view.

The catch: Motorized only — there is no manual version of this shade, so the motor cost is not optional. The valance projects past a frame shallower than 2 3/4 inches, and Graywind's own lead time runs to roughly 8 to 11 days delivered after the size confirmation.

Motorized Roller Shades, Matter over Thread

SmartWings

Made-to-measure roller shades sold with a choice of motor — including Matter over Thread, HomeKit, Zigbee and Z-Wave versions — and fabric in 50%, 70% or 100% blackout. The Matter motor is the reason to look here: it joins an existing Thread network directly instead of adding another brand hub and another app.

Who it’s for: Households already running Matter or Thread devices, and anyone who wants genuine blackout fabric on a motor rather than a light-filtering band shade.

The catch: Self-measure and self-install, with pricing that steps up past 26 inches wide, and the protocol is chosen at order time — you cannot change the motor later. A roller still leaves side gaps on an inside mount, so even blackout fabric needs an outside mount for real darkness.

Buying guide

What actually matters

Made to measure is not optional here

Nearly every motorized shade is cut to your numbers, which puts the measuring risk entirely on you, and there is no trimming it afterwards — tube, fabric and bottom rail are one assembly. Measure the opening in three places and use the narrowest for an inside mount, exactly as in how to measure for blinds. Most makers also run a size-confirmation email before production, so plan on a week or two rather than next-day delivery.

Depth, because the motor lives in the headrail

A motorized headrail or cassette is deeper than a manual one, and the published minimum inside-mount depth is the number that decides whether your shade fits inside the recess or has to sit outside it on brackets. Shallow frames are common in older houses and on replacement windows. Check that figure on the listing before you fall for a fabric, and read inside mount vs outside mount if it is borderline.

Noise, and where it matters

Tubular motors are quiet but not silent — a long shade takes several seconds of audible whirr to travel. In a living room nobody notices. On a bedroom shade set to open at 6:45am the noise is the entire point and you should want it. On a nursery shade it is the thing that wakes the baby you were trying to let sleep; if that is the room, start from best blackout shades for a nursery and treat the motor as optional.

What automation is actually good for

Two schedules earn their keep. The first is closing before the sun arrives on a west-facing room in summer, because an interior shade that is already down when the sun hits performs far better than one lowered after the room has warmed. The second is a wake-up open that works as daylight rather than as an alarm. Everything else — opening on arrival, closing at sunset — is pleasant and will not change how the room feels. If heat is the real problem, best blinds to keep heat out explains why the fabric matters more than the schedule.

Cord safety is a real reason to motorize

A motorized shade has no cord and no loop, which puts it in the same safety category as a cordless shade without the reaching. On a window a child can get to, that is a stronger argument for the motor than any convenience feature. Are cordless blinds worth it covers the cheaper route to the same outcome.

Methodology

How we chose

Selection is on published size envelope, motor and power options, the stated smart-home protocols, and the inside-mount depth each maker publishes. We do not install or bench-test motors and we publish no runtime or noise figure of our own; where a number appears it is the manufacturer's. Methodology.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Are smart blinds worth it?

On a window you cannot comfortably reach, yes — it is the difference between a covering you use and one you forget. On a reachable window a motor is a convenience costing several times the price of a manual shade. The strongest non-convenience arguments are cord safety and scheduling a west-facing room closed before the afternoon sun arrives.

Do smart blinds need a hub?

Most do for voice control. Bluetooth motors work from your phone in the same room but need a bridge before Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home can reach them. Motors with Matter over Thread join an existing Thread network without a brand hub, which is the version to buy if you already have one.

Can I make my existing blinds smart?

If they are horizontal blinds with a tilt wand, yes — a retrofit tilt motor clips onto the wand and turns the slats on a schedule or by voice. It cannot raise or lower the blind, so it solves glare and privacy rather than darkness. For roller or cellular shades there is no equivalent retrofit worth having; you replace the shade.

How long does the battery last in a motorized shade?

Makers quote months rather than weeks, but the figure depends entirely on how many times a day the shade travels and how heavy it is. The practical answer is to add a solar panel if the window gets direct sun, or hardwire it if the window is one you cannot easily reach — the recharge is the chore that makes people stop using the motor.

Are motorized blinds safe for a child's room?

They have no cord and no loop, which removes the hazard corded blinds carry. The remaining considerations are noise on a schedule and cost; a cordless manual shade reaches the same safety outcome for much less. See are cordless blinds worth it.
