Best blackout shades for a nursery

Four cordless shades for a room where naps happen at 2pm — and the structural reason a shade alone rarely gets a nursery dark.

By Janet H. · Last updated October 10, 2026 · How we choose

A nursery with a cot beside a window fitted with a blackout shade

The best nursery blackout shade is a cordless blackout cellular shade — the CHICOLOGY Cordless Blackout Cellular Shades are the pick — fitted inside the recess, with a blackout curtain over the top if the room needs to be dark for a daytime nap. Cordless is not a feature here; it is the entry requirement.

Two facts shape every choice on this page. First, a looped cord near a cot is the specific hazard the entire cordless category exists to remove — the US window covering industry moved retail stock to cordless-by-default for exactly this reason, and nothing corded belongs in a room with a baby in it. Second, a shade alone will not get a nursery dark at 2pm. Every recess-mounted shade leaves a gap at the sides and above the headrail, and in a room you are trying to darken against full daylight, that outline is the whole problem.

Before the list

What a nursery actually needs

A nursery is the hardest darkness problem in the house, because the hour that matters is the middle of the afternoon rather than dawn. Night-time darkness is easy; competing with a bright sky at 2pm is not. That means the standard you are buying to is higher than for an adult bedroom, and it is why so many parents end up buying twice.

Alongside darkness there are three nursery-specific requirements. No cords, ever — nothing with a loop, a chain or a dangling pull. Nothing the shade can drop — check how the headrail fixes and whether anything can be pulled free from a cot. And cleanable, because a nursery window gets touched. Those three narrow the field far more than fabric specifications do.

01 — Best overall

Blackout Cellular Shades, cordless

CHICOLOGY

A cordless blackout honeycomb shade: the cell structure traps still air against the glass, so it insulates as well as darkens, and the operating mechanism is your hand on the bottom rail — no cord, chain or loop anywhere on it.

Who it’s for: The default nursery shade in a window with a recess deep enough for the headrail, where you want darkness and a quieter, warmer room from one product.

The catch: Fitted inside the recess it still leaves the side gaps every shade has, which on a south-facing nursery at 2pm reads as a bright outline. Pair it with a curtain or outside-mount it.

Cordless Blackout Honeycomb Cellular Shades

SBARTAR

A cordless blackout honeycomb in a construction built around the trapped-air layer, which is what makes a cellular shade a thermal product rather than just a dark one. In a nursery that also means a marginally quieter room.

Who it’s for: A nursery with a cold or drafty window, where the pane itself is making the room uncomfortable as well as bright.

The catch: The honeycomb cells collect dust and cannot be washed — only vacuumed with a brush head or spot cleaned. In a room you want clean, that is a real consideration.

03 — Best no-tools option

No Tools Original Blackout Pleated Paper Shade

Redi Shade

A pleated blackout paper shade that cuts to width with scissors and sticks to the window frame with adhesive clips — no drilling, no brackets, no cords. Because it adheres to the frame rather than hanging inside the recess, it often leaks less light at the edges than a conventional shade.

Who it’s for: Renters, a temporary nursery, a travel setup, or the first month in a room before you commit to anything.

The catch: It is paper. It will not take repeated raising and lowering for years, it tears if a toddler reaches it, and the adhesive can mark a painted frame when removed.

04 — Best for a room that is not only for sleeping

Single Cell Room Darkening Cordless Cellular Shades

Arlo Blinds

A single-cell room-darkening cordless cellular shade — dimmer rather than dark, which is deliberately the point in a nursery that doubles as a playroom and needs to be usable during the day without the shade fully up.

Who it’s for: A nursery used for play as well as naps, or a parent who wants the room dim rather than black for daytime sleep.

The catch: Room darkening is not blackout, and will not hold against direct afternoon sun. If 2pm naps in a bright room are the requirement, this is the wrong half of the category.

Buying guide

What actually matters in a nursery shade

Cordless, and what that actually means

Cordless means there is no operating cord at all — you move the shade by pushing the bottom rail with your hand. It is different from a cord that has been tidied onto a cleat, and different again from a continuous-loop chain, which is still a loop. If a shade is already fitted and it is corded, a cleat mounted high on the wall is an interim measure, not a fix. The wider picture is in are cordless blinds worth it.

Where the light will still get in

In order: the two side gaps between shade and recess, the slot above the headrail, and the gap under the bottom rail. A blackout shade sized correctly to the recess leaves an eighth to a quarter of an inch each side, and that is enough to put a bright line on the wall on a sunny afternoon. Outside-mounting the shade — on the wall, overlapping the frame by an inch or two — removes most of it. How to fix curtain light gaps applies here too.

Measuring, because shades cannot be let out

Measure the recess width at the top, middle and bottom and order from the narrowest, because window openings are rarely square. Measure the depth as well: a cellular headrail needs clearance to sit inside without fouling the glass or a window handle. The full sequence is in how to measure for blinds.

The temporary option, which is not a compromise

Adhesive pleated paper shades are genuinely useful in a nursery. They cost little, cut to width with scissors, stick to the frame with no tools and no holes, and because they adhere to the frame rather than hanging inside the recess they often leak less than a properly fitted shade. They are the right answer for a rental, for a travel cot room, and for the first month while you work out what the room actually needs.

Methodology

How we chose

Cord safety first — nothing with an operating loop is listed. Then darkness in daylight, then the fit and measuring tolerances a nursery window typically allows. Selected on published construction and materials and on the failure patterns owners report, not on headline scores. We do not lab-test these shades, we own no light meter and we publish no light-blocking percentage of our own. Criteria on the methodology page.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

What are the best blackout shades for a nursery?

A cordless blackout cellular shade, fitted inside the recess. Cordless is the entry requirement rather than a feature, because a looped operating cord near a cot is the hazard the whole category exists to remove, and cellular adds insulation and a little sound damping to the darkness.

Will a blackout shade make a nursery dark enough for daytime naps?

On its own, usually not. Every recess-mounted shade leaves a gap at the sides and above the headrail, and against a bright afternoon sky that outline lights the room. Either outside-mount the shade so it overlaps the frame, or add a blackout curtain on a rod mounted wider and higher than the window.

Are blackout blinds safe in a nursery?

Cordless ones are what to buy — no loop, no chain, no dangling pull anywhere a child can reach. Check also how the headrail is fixed and that nothing can be pulled free from the cot, and keep the cot away from the window regardless.

Blackout shades or blackout curtains for a nursery?

Both, if the room has to be dark at 2pm. The shade covers the window neatly and insulates; the curtain is the only one of the two that can be mounted wider and higher than the opening, which is what closes the edge light. If you buy one, buy the curtain for darkness or the shade for neatness.

How do I darken a nursery window without drilling?

An adhesive pleated blackout paper shade cut to width, or a blackout liner on a tension rod inside the recess. Both avoid holes, and because the paper shade sticks to the frame rather than hanging inside it, it frequently leaks less light than a bracket-mounted shade.
