Best bamboo shades
The one covering that improves the light instead of just reducing it - and the honest limit of an open weave.
By Janet H. · Last updated October 22, 2026 · How we choose

For most windows the best bamboo shade is the Arlo Blinds woven wood roman: real bamboo, cordless, and the weave that gives you the warm filtered light people buy this category for. If the window is overlooked, or the room has to get dark, an unlined weave will disappoint you and the lined version is what you actually want.
Bamboo and woven wood shades are the odd product in window treatments: everything else on this site reduces light, and woven wood changes its color. Hard noon daylight comes through a reed weave as a warm, broken glow that makes a room look better than it did. That is a real effect and it is why these shades keep selling. The catch is equally real, and it is about what happens after dark.

Before the list
What you are actually buying
A woven wood shade is bamboo reeds, jute, rattan or grass woven together with thread and hung as a roman shade - it folds up in soft stacked pleats - or rolled on a bottom rail. Because every weave has gaps between the fibers, light passes through unevenly and the shade reads as textured rather than flat. No printed fabric imitates it convincingly, which is why the real thing costs more than a roller shade and keeps winning anyway.
Natural material also means natural variation. Reeds differ in color and thickness from batch to batch, and two shades from the same line on neighboring windows will not match exactly. If that will bother you, buy all your shades in one order rather than adding a window later. The one opening woven wood cannot serve as a roman shade is a sliding door you walk through, where a panel track or a vertical blind is the mechanism that actually works.
Criteria
The three things that decide a woven wood shade
Weave density, which is the whole privacy question
This is the specification that matters and the one listings describe worst. A loose weave shows visible gaps between reeds, glows beautifully, and gives you almost no privacy at any time of day. A tight weave is nearly solid, gives real daytime privacy, and sacrifices some of the glow. Listings signal this with words like semi-sheer, translucent and privacy rather than with a number. Read for those words, and assume the photo is shot to flatter the weave.
Lining, and what you give up by adding it
A liner is a fabric layer bonded behind the weave. It converts the shade from decorative to functional: real privacy after dark, room darkening or blackout depending on the fabric, and a useful amount of insulation at a cold window. What you lose is the thing you bought the shade for. A lined woven wood shade is a dark rectangle with a nice texture on it, not a glowing window. Decide which of those you want before you choose a line, because it cannot be changed later on a bonded shade.
Cordless lift, and how the stack sits
Cordless is the default on current stock lines and the right choice on any window a child or pet can reach. The thing to check beyond that is the stack: when raised, a woven wood roman bundles into a deep bar of folded reeds at the top of the window, typically six to ten inches on a full-length shade. On a short window that stack eats a real share of the glass, which argues for an outside mount above the frame. Inside mount vs outside mount covers the trade.

01 — Best overall
Bamboo and woven wood Roman shades
Arlo Blinds
Natural woven bamboo that filters daylight into a warm, textured glow, on a cordless lift. It is the best-looking covering in this category and it turns a plain window into a feature.
Who it’s for: An unoverlooked window in a room where the texture is the point and the shade never has to make it dark.
The catch: The weave is open, so it is not private after dark and it does not darken a room. An overlooked window needs the optional privacy liner, which changes both the look and the price.

02 — Best for daytime privacy
Cordless Bamboo Roman Shade, woven wood
CHICOLOGY
A tighter woven-wood weave than most bamboo shades, on a cordless lift with a matching valance. The denser weave is what buys daytime privacy: you get the texture without a shade you can see straight through.
Who it’s for: A street-facing window where you want the weave but not a shade people can see through at noon.
The catch: Translucent is not opaque. After dark, with a lamp on behind it, a lit room is still readable in outline from the street - the same caveat that applies to every unlined woven wood shade.

03 — Best lined, for a dark room
Cordless Blackout Bamboo Roman Shades
LazBlinds
Woven bamboo with a room-darkening backing bonded behind it, so the shade keeps the natural face and gains the opacity a bare weave never has. The backing also adds a usable amount of thermal insulation at a cold window.
Who it’s for: Bedrooms and media rooms that want woven wood on the window and still have to get dark.
The catch: The lining stiffens the shade, so it stacks into a deeper, blockier bundle at the top than an unlined bamboo shade and shows the fold lines more. You also lose the glow that makes bamboo worth having in the first place.

04 — Best budget
Bamboo Roman Shades with valance
UNISHADES
A stock-size cordless bamboo shade with the valance included, sold across a wide ladder of widths. It is the cheapest honest way to put real woven wood on a window rather than a printed lookalike.
Who it’s for: Spare rooms, rentals and a first try at the look, where stock sizing and a looser weave are an acceptable trade.
The catch: Stock sizing means you round down and accept a light gap at the sides, and the weave is looser than the pricier lines - which reads as more texture up close and less privacy at dusk.

05 — Best for a sliding door
Natural Woven Light Filtering Panel Track Blinds
GoDear Design
Woven-wood panels on an adjustable track that slide past one another, trimmable to fit. It brings the bamboo look to the one opening a roman shade cannot serve: a sliding door you walk through.
Who it’s for: A patio door or a wide opening, where a roman shade cannot work and a vertical blind is the thing you are trying to avoid.
The catch: Far more expensive than a stock bamboo roman, and it needs a straight solid surface above the opening for the track. Panels also give you a few set positions rather than a continuous adjustment.

Buying guide
What else matters
The privacy failure everyone discovers at night
Daytime privacy at any window is an illusion created by brightness: it is brighter outside than in, so the glass and anything over it reads as opaque from the street. Switch a lamp on at 8pm and that reverses. An unlined woven wood shade becomes a backlit screen, and a room behind it is readable in outline. This is not a defect in a particular brand - it is what an open weave is. If the window faces a sidewalk, buy the lined version or plan a second layer. Privacy at night without losing daylight sets out both approaches.
The two-layer setup that solves it properly
The arrangement that gets the most out of woven wood is the shade doing the daytime job and a curtain doing the evening one: an unlined bamboo shade inside the recess for the glow, and a pair of blackout or heavy panels on a rod outside the frame, open all day and closed at night. Velvet is the usual choice for that outer layer, because the weight that darkens the room also keeps the panel hanging flat. You get the texture when you are looking at the window and the darkness when you are not. How to block light from windows explains why the curtain has to be mounted wide to do its half.
Glare, and what woven wood is genuinely good at
On a screen-facing window, a woven wood shade is a middling glare solution. It breaks up direct sun and takes the hard edge off it, but the gaps still throw bright spots and a low afternoon sun comes straight through them. A solar roller shade is the better tool for that specific job - see best roller shades and how to stop screen glare from windows. Where woven wood wins is a room you sit in rather than work in, and a window you look at rather than past.
Cleaning, moisture and the rooms to avoid
Natural fibers cannot be washed and should not be soaked. A vacuum brush attachment and an occasional dry cloth is the whole maintenance routine. That rules out two rooms: a bathroom, where steam will eventually mark and warp the reeds, and the window immediately above a cooktop, where grease settles into a weave and never comes out. Window treatments for a bathroom and window treatments for a kitchen have the materials that do belong there.
| If you want | Choose | Accept |
|---|---|---|
| The warm glow | Unlined, loose weave | No privacy once your lights are on |
| Daytime privacy | Unlined, tight weave | Less glow; still not private at night |
| A dark room | Lined or blackout-backed | A deeper stack and no glow at all |
| Insulation at a cold window | Lined | A cellular shade still insulates better |
| A sliding door | Woven wood panel track | Several times the price of a roman |
Methodology
How we chose
Selection is on published material and weave description, lift mechanism, lining options, available sizes, and the failure patterns owners report for natural fibers specifically - loose threads at the edges, color variation between panels, and warping in damp rooms. We do not lab-test shades and publish no light-transmission figure of our own. Full criteria on the methodology page.
FAQ
Questions people actually ask
Are bamboo shades private?
During the day, yes if the weave is tight - outside is brighter than inside, so nobody can see in. After dark that reverses, and an unlined woven wood shade becomes a backlit screen with your room readable in outline behind it. For evening privacy you need a lined shade or a curtain over the top.
Do bamboo shades block light?
Unlined, no - they filter it into a warm patterned glow and a room behind one is still bright at 6am. Blackout-lined and room-darkening versions genuinely do darken a room, at the cost of the glow that makes the material worth having.
Should I line my bamboo shades?
Line them if the window is overlooked at night or the room has to get dark - a bedroom, a media room, a ground-floor room facing a sidewalk. Leave them unlined if the appeal is the light itself and privacy is handled some other way. A bonded liner cannot be added or removed later, so choose at purchase.
Can bamboo shades go in a bathroom?
It is the room to avoid. Natural fibers absorb moisture, and repeated condensation marks and eventually warps the reeds. A wipeable faux wood or vinyl blind, or film on the glass, lasts far longer in a steamy room.
How do you clean bamboo shades?
Vacuum with a soft brush attachment, working across the weave, and wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. Do not soak them, do not use a wet cloth on an unsealed weave, and never put them in water - natural fibers swell, stain and lose their shape.
