Best vertical blinds

The covering nobody admits to wanting, on the opening nothing else covers cheaply.

By Janet H. · Last updated October 22, 2026 · How we choose

Fabric vertical blind slats angled across a window, partly open

For most sliding doors the best vertical blind is the CHICOLOGY 3.5-inch PVC vertical, because it is cordless, it traverses to either side, and a damaged slat is a few dollars to swap rather than a reason to replace the whole blind. If the problem is a room that has to get dark, a blackout fabric vertical does that job and a PVC one never will.

Vertical blinds have a reputation problem that is mostly about the beige 1990s office version, and it gets in the way of a practical fact: a sliding door is six to eight feet of glass with a handle in the middle and a track along the bottom, and almost nothing else covers it for under a hundred dollars while still letting you walk through. This page is about which ones survive that traffic, and about the cheapest repair in window treatments.

Before the list

What a vertical blind is actually for

A vertical blind is a row of hanging slats on carriers that run inside a headrail. A wand tilts every slat at once for light and privacy; the same wand, or a cord, traverses the whole stack to one side so you can open the door. That second motion is the entire reason the product exists. A horizontal blind has to be lifted and held up; a vertical just slides out of the way and stays there, which is what you want on an opening you walk through several times a day.

It is also the only common covering where a single damaged piece is a spare part. A dog walks through a vertical blind and you replace two slats for a few dollars. A dog walks through a cellular shade and you replace the shade. On a door with children, pets, or a cat that has decided the slats are a curtain of toys, that difference is the whole argument.

Criteria

The four things that decide one

Slat material, which decides everything downstream

PVC or vinyl slats are rigid, wipe clean, cost the least, and tolerate a west-facing door without fading much. They also clatter in a draft and read as functional. Fabric slats hang quietly, soften the light and look far better in a living room, but they hold cooking smells, cannot be wiped, and sag over time on a long drop. Faux wood verticals exist and look the most expensive, but they are heavy enough that the carriers wear faster. Choose the material for the room first; everything else on this page follows from it.

The stack, and which side it lands on

When a vertical blind opens, the slats bunch into a stack roughly eight to twelve inches deep at one end. On a sliding door that stack has to land on the side you do not walk through, or you will be pushing fabric out of the way every time you go outside. A blind that traverses left, right, or splits to both sides from the center is worth specifying deliberately rather than accepting whatever arrives. Reversible-stack headrails let you change your mind after it is hung, which is the feature to look for if the door is new to you.

The carriers, which are the part that actually fails

Nothing on a vertical blind wears out faster than the small plastic carriers that hold each slat and ride in the headrail. They are what snaps when a slat gets yanked, and on a cheap headrail they are not replaceable individually. Check before you buy whether the manufacturer sells spare carriers and clips. A blind with available spares is a ten-year product; the same blind without them is a two-year product with a one-piece failure.

Width first, then drop, then the bottom chain

For an outside mount above a slider, measure the glass opening and add three to four inches each side so the closed blind overlaps the frame rather than stopping at it. The drop should finish about half an inch clear of the floor, because a vertical slat that touches carpet catches on it and twists the carrier above. Many verticals ship with a bottom chain linking the slats: it stops them swinging in a draft, and it is the first thing to remove if you want a cleaner look and do not mind the movement. How to measure for blinds has the full method, and inside mount vs outside mount covers the choice itself.

Vertical Blinds, 3.5 inch PVC, cordless wand tilt and traverse

CHICOLOGY

Rigid 3.5-inch PVC slats on a cordless wand that both tilts and traverses, with a reversible stack so the bunched slats can be sent to whichever side of the door you do not use. A valance is included, which hides the headrail that otherwise gives the product away.

Who it’s for: A sliding glass door, a patio door or a French door in a household that uses it daily - the case vertical blinds were invented for.

The catch: PVC slats clatter against each other whenever the door is open and a breeze comes through, and nothing about the blind darkens a room. In a bedroom with a slider this is the wrong specification.

02 — Best curved-slat look

Smooth Curved Vertical, 78 by 84-Inch

LOTUS & WINDOWARE

A gently curved vinyl slat rather than a flat one. The curve stiffens the slat so it hangs straighter on a long drop, and it closes with a tighter overlap than a flat slat manages, which visibly cuts the light running down each joint.

Who it’s for: Tall windows and doors where flat slats have previously gone wavy, and anyone who wants a closed blind to read as one surface rather than a row of strips.

The catch: The curve is the whole product, so replacement slats have to be curved too - a flat spare will not sit in the stack correctly. Keep a spare pack from the same line rather than buying generic slats later.

03 — Best for darkening a sliding door

Faux Linen Fabric Vertical Shades, 100% blackout

HMYI

A blackout-backed faux linen panel that traverses across a slider on a vertical track, so it opens like a vertical blind and closes like a curtain. It is the one format in this category that genuinely darkens the room behind it.

Who it’s for: A bedroom or a media room with a sliding door, where a PVC vertical would solve the privacy and leave you looking at a bright doorway at 6am.

The catch: Fabric cannot be wiped, so a door that opens onto a yard, a grill or a muddy dog is the wrong home for it. There is also no tilt - it is open or closed, with no in-between light setting.

Panel Track Blinds, extendable blackout vertical panels

VEVOR

Wide flat panels that slide past one another on an extendable track, trimmable to width and height. It is the contemporary answer to the same problem a vertical blind solves, without the row-of-slats look that makes people dislike verticals in the first place.

Who it’s for: Sliding doors and wide openings in a room whose appearance you care about, plus room dividers and walk-in closets where a track is doing double duty.

The catch: Panels give you three or four positions rather than a continuous tilt, so you cannot fine-tune the light the way slats allow. The track also needs a straight, solid mounting surface above the opening.

PVC Vertical Blind Replacement Slats, curved smooth, 82.5 Length

DALIX

A pack of plain curved PVC slats in the standard 3.5-inch width, pre-punched to clip into the carriers already in your headrail. The cheapest fix in window treatments: a working blind with five broken slats becomes a working blind.

Who it’s for: Anyone whose vertical blind is structurally fine and cosmetically wrecked - which is most of the vertical blinds that get thrown away.

The catch: It only works if your slats are the same width and the punch pattern matches, and a new white slat beside a ten-year-old sun-faded one will not match in color. On a badly faded blind, replace the whole set rather than a few.

Buying guide

What else matters once you have chosen

They will not make a room dark, unless you buy the fabric kind

A standard PVC vertical gives you privacy and glare control and nothing like darkness. Light comes down every slat overlap, over the headrail, and around both ends. Blackout fabric verticals and vertical cellular shades are genuinely different products and do darken a room, at two to four times the price. If the room in question is a bedroom with a slider, that is the specification to read for, and how to block light from windows explains why a single layer rarely gets there on its own.

Which way to tilt them, for privacy that works

Closed vertical slats still leave a narrow sightline along their edges, and the direction they face changes who can see in. Tilt so the slat faces lean away from the point you are overlooked from, not toward it. The same rule and the reason behind it are set out in which way to turn blinds for privacy, and it costs nothing to get right.

Draft and heat, honestly

A sliding door is usually the coldest surface in the room, and a vertical blind does very little about that: air moves freely through the gaps between slats and over the open headrail. If the real complaint is a cold draft at the door rather than light or privacy, the honest answer is a cellular shade or a heavy curtain hung outside the frame, not a better vertical. How to stop window drafts has the order to work in.

The upgrade path, and the cheaper detour

There are two routes out of a vertical blind you dislike. The expensive one is replacing it with a panel track, a vertical cellular shade or a set of curtains, which vertical blind alternatives covers in full - and if the objection is purely the look, a woven wood panel track does the same job in a natural material, covered in best bamboo shades. The cheap one, which almost nobody tries first, is hanging a curtain on a rod above the existing blind and leaving the blind in place to do the light control: how to hang curtains over vertical blinds is the method, and it is usually the right answer in a rental.

Pick the slat material for the room, then the stack direction for the doorway.

Methodology

How we chose

Selection is on published slat material and width, the lift and traverse mechanism, available stock sizes, whether spare slats and carriers can be bought separately, and the failure patterns owners report for this category specifically - snapped carriers, twisted bottom hems, and fabric sag on long drops. We do not lab-test blinds and publish no durability score of our own. Full criteria on the methodology page.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Are vertical blinds out of style?

The beige office vertical is, and that is what the reputation attaches to. The format itself is not - panel tracks and fabric verticals are the same mechanism in a contemporary shape, and on a sliding door that mechanism is still the one that makes sense. If the look is the objection rather than the function, a panel track solves it.

What is the best material for vertical blinds?

PVC or vinyl for any door with daily traffic, a kitchen, or a rental: it wipes clean, costs the least and does not hold smells. Fabric for a living room where the look matters and the door is used less often. Blackout fabric if the room behind the door has to get dark.

Can you replace just one vertical blind slat?

Yes, and it is the main practical advantage of the format. Replacement slats are sold in packs by width and length and clip into the carriers already in the headrail. Measure an undamaged slat - width and length - and match it exactly, including whether yours are flat or curved.

Do vertical blinds block light?

Standard PVC verticals reduce light; they do not block it. Light comes down every slat overlap, over the top of the headrail and around both ends. For a dark room you need a blackout fabric vertical, a vertical cellular shade, or a curtain hung outside the frame over whatever is already there.

Which way should vertical blinds stack?

Away from the side of the door you walk through. The open stack is eight to twelve inches deep, so if it lands on the handle side you will be pushing it aside every time you go out. Many headrails are reversible, which lets you change the stack direction after fitting.
