Comparison
Curtains vs roman shades
The same soft fabric, mounted two completely different ways — and the mounting is what decides which one your window wants.
By Janet H. · Last updated October 11, 2026 · How we choose

Choose curtains when the window is wide, when you want it dark, or when you need to cover an awkward opening cheaply. Choose a roman shade when the window is narrow, when there is no wall space beside the glass, or when you want the softness of fabric without losing a foot of room on each side. Everything else follows from those two sentences.
People treat this as a style question and it is really a geometry one. A curtain is fabric on a rod that extends past the window, so it needs wall. A roman shade is the same kind of fabric folding upward inside or just above the opening, so it needs depth instead. Pick the one your wall can actually accommodate and the look sorts itself out.

Light
Darkness: curtains win, and it is not close
Any shade mounted inside the window recess leaves a gap down each side where the brackets hold the unit clear of the frame. On a roman shade that gap is usually a quarter to half an inch, which is invisible at noon and a bright stripe at 5am. Nothing about the fabric fixes it, because the problem is the mounting, not the material. A curtain hung on a rod extending 8 to 12 inches past the frame has no such gap: the fabric overlaps the wall on both sides and the light has nowhere to come around.
If the window is in a bedroom and the complaint is early light, buy curtains and mount them wide and high. How to fix curtain light gaps covers the three remaining leaks — top, sides and the floor. A roman shade can be mounted outside the frame to close the same gaps, and some are made in room-darkening fabric, but the fold stack at the top is where the last of the light gets in.
Fit
Space: roman shades win, and it matters more than you think
A curtain does not disappear when you open it. Two lined panels stack into roughly a foot of gathered fabric on each side of the window, and that fabric needs somewhere to go — wall, not glass, or you have made the window smaller for the sake of covering it at night. Rooms where the window sits in a corner, between cabinets, above a radiator, or behind a sofa simply do not have that wall.
A roman shade stacks upward into a band of folded fabric at the top of the opening, typically six to twelve inches deep when fully raised depending on the drop. It costs you a little glass and no wall at all. On a kitchen window above a counter, a bathroom window, or a window in a small bedroom, that is the whole argument.
Fit
Width, and the point where shades stop
Curtains scale by addition. A wider window takes more panels on a longer rod with a center support, and the arithmetic in how many curtain panels do I need keeps working at any size. A roman shade is one piece of fabric on one lift mechanism, and past roughly six feet the unit becomes heavy, slow and prone to sagging in the middle of each fold. Two shades side by side leave a visible seam in the middle of the view.
So on a picture window or a patio slider, curtains are not just preferable — they are usually the only one of the two that works. Best window treatments for large windows goes through the options at that size.
Money
Cost, honestly counted
A roman shade is one purchase with the brackets in the box. Curtains are three: panels, a rod, and brackets with anchors suited to your wall, plus a center support over about sixty inches of span. People compare panel prices against shade prices and get a misleading answer, because the hardware is routinely a third of the curtain budget and invisible until checkout. Count the rod.
Against that, curtain panels are the cheapest covering per square foot of window by a wide margin, and they are the only one you can replace in isolation when a dog or a toddler gets to them.
Living with it
Cleaning, and why it decides kitchens
Most curtain panels go in a washing machine. Almost no roman shade does — the fabric is mounted on a system of rods and cords, so it is a spot-clean or professional-clean item. In a kitchen, where airborne grease settles on anything textile, that difference is decisive and usually points away from both of them toward a wipeable blind. Best blinds for kitchen windows covers that case.
The combination
Can you use both?
Yes, and on a formal living room window it is the best-looking answer there is: a light-filtering roman shade inside the recess doing the daytime work, with floor-length panels on an outside-mounted rod for the evening and for the softness at the edges. You pay for both, and it only works where there is wall space for the panels to stack. If the shade is doing the real work, the panels can be unlined and inexpensive.

01 — If you chose a roman shade
Cordless Fabric Roman Shades, light filtering
Arlo Blinds
Real fabric folding into horizontal pleats on a cordless lift — positional control with the softness of textile rather than the look of hardware.
Who it’s for: Narrow windows and rooms with no wall space beside the glass for a curtain to stack onto.
The catch: The folded stack sits deep at the top of the window when raised, which on a short window covers a real share of the glass.

02 — If you chose curtains
Thermal Insulated Blackout Curtains
NICETOWN
Triple-weave polyester with no coating to crack or peel, machine washable, and sold in a wider ladder of drops than most ranges — including the 108-inch length a near-ceiling rod needs.
Who it’s for: Wide windows, dark bedrooms, and anywhere the covering has to overlap the wall at the edges.
The catch: The grommet header holds the panel an inch off the wall with open gaps between grommets, so light still comes over the top. Add a pelmet, or choose a back-tab version, if that is your problem.

03 — The cost curtains add
Heavy-duty lock-seam drapery rod set
Rod Desyne
Lock-seam steel tube with brackets proportioned to match, which is what stops a rod bowing in the middle or drooping at the ends under lined panels.
Who it’s for: The hardware half of the comparison — rod, brackets and a center support over about sixty inches.
The catch: Function over appearance — the finishes are plain. If the rod is meant to be a decorative feature, you are trading looks for stiffness.

FAQ
Questions people actually ask
Are roman shades or curtains better for a bedroom?
Curtains, if the complaint is light. A roman shade mounted inside the recess always leaves a gap at each side, and that gap is what wakes you. Curtains on a rod extending 8 to 12 inches past the frame close it. A room-darkening roman shade mounted outside the frame is the compromise if there is no wall space for panels.
Do roman shades make a room look smaller?
The opposite, usually. They take no wall space, so the window keeps its full visual width and the room reads larger than it does with two stacks of gathered fabric beside the glass. What they cost you is a band of folded fabric across the top of the opening when raised.
Are roman shades more expensive than curtains?
Per window, usually yes — but the gap narrows once you count the rod, brackets and anchors a curtain needs. On a wide window curtains win clearly on cost, because a roman shade at that width becomes a made-to-measure item.
Can you put curtains over roman shades?
Yes. Mount the shade inside the recess and the curtain rod outside it, high and wide, so the panels stack onto wall rather than glass. The shade handles daylight and the panels handle evening and insulation. It is the standard layered setup in a formal room.
Which is better for insulation?
Lined curtains with proper returns at the sides, because they trap a layer of still air against the glass. A roman shade is a single fabric panel hanging a little proud of the window with air moving freely behind it. If warmth is the goal, a cellular shade beats both — see thermal curtains vs cellular shades.
