Best mini blinds
The cheapest way to put something on a bare window today — and an honest account of how long it lasts.
By Janet H. · Last updated October 11, 2026 · How we choose

The best mini blind for most people is the Achim cordless room darkening vinyl blind: cheap, cordless, available in stock sizes, and washable in a bath when it gets grimy. Mini blinds are a 1-inch slat product bought for one reason — covering a window now, for very little — and the only honest way to review them is on how well they do that and how long they last.
They are the right answer more often than snobbery allows. A garage window, a basement, a rental you leave in eighteen months, a spare room nobody uses, the window behind a door: in all of those, a blind is a function and not a feature, and spending five times as much buys you nothing you will notice.

Before the list
What you are actually buying
A mini blind is horizontal slats about an inch wide — vinyl or thin aluminum — on a slim headrail, in stock widths you pick to the nearest inch. The slats tilt for light and privacy and the whole blind raises. That is the entire product. The price comes from thin material and stock sizing, and both of those have consequences.
Vinyl or aluminum is the first choice. Vinyl slats are slightly thicker, do not crease, and tolerate a wash. Aluminum slats are crisper-looking and dent permanently — a dented slat never sits flat again and leaves a visible kink in a closed blind. For anywhere the blind gets handled, vinyl lasts better. For a window nobody touches, aluminum looks tidier.
The second is cordless or corded. Cordless costs a little more and removes the looped cord entirely, which matters in any room a child or pet can reach. On a cheap blind the cordless spring is also the part most likely to give up first, so a corded mini blind in an adult-only space is arguably the longer-lived purchase. Are cordless blinds worth it goes through the trade honestly.

01 — Best overall
Cordless room darkening vinyl blinds
Achim
Inexpensive cordless vinyl slats in stock sizes. They tilt, they raise, they cost very little, and they can be washed in a bath when a kitchen or a garage makes them grimy.
Who it’s for: Rentals, garages, utility rooms, spare rooms — any window where the blind is a function rather than a feature.
The catch: Thin slats bend easily and a bent slat never sits flat again, leaving a permanent gap in a closed blind. Treat them as replaceable rather than permanent.

02 — Best for no tools at all
No Tools Original Blackout Pleated Paper Shade
Redi Shade
A pleated paper shade that trims to width with scissors and sticks to the frame with adhesive clips — no brackets, no drill, no measuring to the eighth of an inch. The blackout version is genuinely opaque, which no mini blind is.
Who it’s for: Moving week, a rental that bans fixings, and any window that needs covering before the furniture arrives.
The catch: Paper. It creases, it will not take repeated raising and lowering for years, and it is a stopgap by design rather than a blind you keep.

03 — Best upgrade from a mini blind
Basics Cordless Faux Wood Blinds, 2" routeless slats
LEVOLOR
Two-inch faux wood with routeless slats — no drilled lift-cord holes, so a closed blind has no column of light dots across it. The thing a mini blind cannot do, in the room where it matters.
Who it’s for: Bedrooms and any front-facing room where the blind spends time fully closed and you will see every light leak.
The catch: Several times the price of a mini blind, and much heavier — on a window over about five feet it becomes a two-handed lift.

Buying guide
What actually matters
Stock sizing and the gap down the side
Mini blinds come in fixed widths. Measure the opening in three places, take the narrowest, and round down to the nearest available size for an inside mount — a blind that does not fit is worthless and one that is half an inch narrow just has a slightly wider light gap. Many vinyl mini blinds can also be cut to width in-store, which is worth asking about. How to measure for blinds walks the whole process.
They will not make a room dark
Room-darkening mini blinds are opaque slats, not a blackout product. Light comes through the route holes drilled for the lift cords, between the slats where they overlap imperfectly, and down each side of the headrail. In a bedroom that is a lit outline of the window at 5am. If the room has to be dark, a mini blind is the daytime layer and curtains are the answer — how to block light from windows explains the two-layer approach.
Privacy, and the direction nobody checks
Closed slats give privacy in one direction and not the other, depending on which way they are tilted. Slats curving down toward the outside block the view from above — the upstairs window across the street — and slats curving up block it from below. Most people get this backwards; which way to turn blinds for privacy has the rule and the reason.
When to spend more
Three cases justify it. A bedroom wants routeless slats, which mini blinds do not offer — step up to a 2-inch faux wood. A wide window wants something lighter and stiffer, because a long mini blind sags and bows visibly. A room you look at wants a 2-inch slat, because a wall of 1-inch slats reads as institutional however clean it is. Best faux wood blinds is the next rung up.
Cleaning, which is where vinyl earns its place
Vinyl mini blinds can come down and go in a bath of warm water, which is the only realistic way to clean a blind that has lived above a kitchen counter. Aluminum can too, but the slats bend while you handle them. How to clean blinds has the method that does not leave streaks.

How we chose
Selection is on published slat material and width, lift mechanism, available stock sizes, and the failure patterns owners report for cheap blinds specifically — bent slats, failed cordless springs, and sag on wide spans. We do not lab-test blinds. Methodology.
FAQ
Questions people actually ask
Are mini blinds any good?
For what they are, yes. They cover a window, tilt for light and privacy, and cost very little. They are not durable, they will not darken a room, and a 1-inch slat reads as functional rather than decorative. Buy them where the blind is a job to be done, not a thing to look at.
What size mini blind do I need?
Measure the opening width in three places, take the narrowest, and round down to the nearest stock size for an inside mount. For an outside mount, add two to three inches each side. Measure the drop at left, center and right and use the longest.
Vinyl or aluminum mini blinds?
Vinyl if the blind gets handled or needs washing — the slats are thicker and tolerate it. Aluminum looks crisper but dents permanently, and a dented slat leaves a visible kink in a closed blind forever.
Do mini blinds block light?
They reduce it; they do not block it. Light passes through the route holes drilled for the cords, between imperfectly overlapping slats, and down each side of the headrail. For a dark room you need curtains over the top or a blackout shade mounted outside the frame.
Can mini blinds be cut to size?
Many vinyl ones can, and plenty of hardware stores will cut them to width while you wait. The drop is shortened by removing slats from the bottom and re-tying the lift cords, which is doable at home but fiddly.
