Window treatments for sliding glass doors

A sliding glass door is three problems at once. It is wide, so anything covering it is large and heavy. It is a door, so whatever covers it has to get out of the way several times a day without being dragged across the opening. And it is a large sheet of glass, usually the biggest single source of heat loss and solar gain in the room.
That combination rules out most of what works on a normal window and explains why so many of these doors end up with the vertical blinds the builder fitted and nothing else.

Traffic
Problem one — it's a door
The covering needs a stack position — somewhere it lives when you are walking through. For curtains that means the rod extends well past the door on at least one side, so the panels stack on the wall rather than across the glass. For a wide opening, a single-direction draw that stacks entirely to one side usually works better than a pair meeting in the middle.
Also consider which panel of the door actually slides. Covering the fixed panel permanently and leaving the operating panel clear is a perfectly good arrangement and halves the amount of fabric you are moving twice a day.

Problem two — the vertical blinds that came with it
Almost every rental and many owned homes have builder-fitted vertical blinds on the patio door. They work adequately and almost nobody likes them. Do not take them down — the headrail is screwed to the frame and removing it usually marks it. Hang a curtain in front instead, on a rod that clears the track, and the blinds disappear while still being available behind the fabric as a light-control layer.

Thermal
Problem three — heat, in both directions
A patio door is a large, usually poorly-insulated surface. In winter it generates a strong convection current that pools cold air across the floor; in summer it admits a great deal of solar heat.
Thermal curtains help with the winter side, particularly if they are floor length and the top is sealed. The summer side is best handled outside the glass — an exterior shade on a patio or pergola stops the radiation before it enters and outperforms anything you can hang indoors. What actually works on a patio door
Curtains on a wide rod that stacks off the glass, over whatever is already there. Three or four panels, not two — a 72-inch opening needs around 144 inches of combined panel width for proper fullness, and long drops, because a door opening is taller than a window.

First step
Measuring a door opening
Measure the drop from where the rod will actually sit — above the existing blind headrail if there is one — down to the floor. That is usually more than a standard 84-inch panel, so 96 or 108 inches is common.
