Best blinds for garage windows

Nobody should be able to inventory your garage from the sidewalk. The cheap, durable ways to stop that, in a room with no heating and a lot of dust.

By Janet H. · Last updated October 11, 2026 · How we choose

A workshop garage interior with a window letting in daylight

For most garage windows the right answer is the cheapest durable one: Achim cordless room darkening vinyl blinds, which cost very little, tolerate an unheated dusty room, and can be taken down and washed in a bath when they get filthy. If the window has no usable frame to mount brackets on, frosted privacy film on the glass does the same privacy job with no hardware at all.

A garage window is a different brief from any room in the house. Nobody is looking at it, so appearance barely matters. What matters is that a passer-by cannot stand on the sidewalk and take an inventory of what is inside, and that whatever you fit survives a room that swings from freezing to hot, collects sawdust and exhaust, and gets knocked by things being carried past it.

Before the list

What a garage window actually needs

Four things, and none of them is style.

  • Privacy that does not depend on you remembering. A blind left open is a blind not working. In a room you enter twice a week, a permanent solution beats an adjustable one.
  • Tolerance of temperature swings. An unheated garage goes below freezing and above a hundred. Paper creases, adhesive lets go in heat, and cheap vinyl gets brittle in cold — though it is still the most forgiving of the three.
  • Dust tolerance. Sawdust, brake dust and exhaust settle on everything. Anything you cannot wipe or wash is a mistake.
  • Cheapness, honestly. This is the one window in the house where spending more buys you nothing you will notice.

There is also a light question people forget. If you use the garage as a workshop, you want the daylight — so a covering you can open matters after all. If it is storage, you do not, and permanent film is simply better.

01 — Best overall

Cordless room darkening vinyl blinds

Achim

Inexpensive cordless vinyl slats in stock sizes. They tilt, they raise, they cost very little, and when a workshop makes them filthy they come down and go in a bath of warm water.

Who it’s for: A garage you work in: you want the daylight when you are there and the window covered when you are not.

The catch: Thin slats bend easily and a bent slat never sits flat again, leaving a permanent gap in a closed blind. Treat them as replaceable. Closed slats also still show a lit interior at night.

02 — Best for permanent privacy

Frosted Glass Window Privacy Film, static cling

rabbitgoo

Static-cling film that frosts the glass itself. Complete privacy day and night, nothing to close, nothing to dust, and daylight still passes through — the right answer when the garage is storage rather than a workspace.

Who it’s for: Storage garages, street-facing windows, and any garage where the contents should not be visible from the sidewalk at any hour.

The catch: It does not open, so you lose the view and any ventilation benefit of an uncovered window. Static cling also needs smooth glass — it will not hold on the textured or wired glass common in older garages.

03 — Best if it is a converted room

Basics Cordless Faux Wood Blinds, 2" routeless slats

LEVOLOR

Two-inch faux wood with routeless slats, so a closed blind has no column of light holes across it. Faux wood does not swell or warp in an unheated, damp garage the way real timber would, and it looks like a room rather than a storeroom.

Who it’s for: Garages converted to a gym, office or studio, where the window is now part of a space people spend time in.

The catch: Several times the cost of a vinyl blind, and much heavier — on a wide garage window it becomes a two-handed lift and strains the cordless spring.

04 — Best with no frame to screw into

No Tools Original Blackout Pleated Paper Shade

Redi Shade

A pleated shade that trims to width with scissors and attaches with adhesive clips rather than brackets, which is the answer when the window sits in masonry with no wooden surround. The blackout version is genuinely opaque.

Who it’s for: Garage windows with no frame to mount to, and anyone who wants the window covered this afternoon for the price of lunch.

The catch: Paper, and adhesive. In an unheated garage that swings from freezing to hot, the adhesive is the part that lets go, and the material creases rather than lasting for years.

Buying guide

What actually matters

Permanent or adjustable — decide first

This is the whole decision. Film frosts the glass permanently: complete privacy day and night, nothing to remember, nothing to dust, and daylight still comes through. A blind lets you open the window for light and air, which matters in a workshop, and requires you to actually close it again. Pick film for a storage garage, a blind for a workspace, and film plus a blind for a workshop on a busy street.

Privacy at night reverses — and a garage light is bright

A partially closed blind or a sheer covering works during the day because the outside is brighter than the inside. The moment you switch on a garage strip light, that reverses and the window shows the room clearly. In a garage this matters more than in a house, because a lit garage at night is exactly when the contents are most visible. Film does not have this problem, because it obscures the glass itself. Privacy at night without losing daylight explains the mechanism.

Mounting, when there is no frame to speak of

Garage windows are often set directly into masonry or a steel frame with no wooden surround to screw into. That rules out standard brackets. The workable options are film on the glass, an adhesive or no-drill shade on the glazing bead, or an outside mount into the block using the correct masonry anchor. Do not hang anything heavy from an anchor in soft mortar. Best no-drill blinds and shades covers the no-fixings route.

Insulation is a red herring

People ask whether a blind will make a cold garage warmer. On its own, barely — a slatted blind is an open structure that traps nothing, and even a cellular shade is only slowing heat loss through one small window in a room that is almost certainly losing far more through the door. If the garage is being converted to a usable space, the work is insulation and the door, not the window covering. How to stop window drafts is honest about where the wins are.

Cleaning, which decides vinyl over everything else

A garage blind gets properly dirty. Vinyl slats come down, go in a bath of warm water, and go back up — which no fabric shade and no paper shade will survive. That single property is why vinyl wins here despite being the cheapest-looking option in the house. How to clean blinds has the method.

Methodology

How we chose

Selection is on material durability in an unheated room, cleanability, mounting options where there is no wooden frame, and whether the covering keeps working after dark. We do not test products in garages and publish no measured figure of our own. Methodology.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

What is the best covering for a garage window?

Cheap cordless vinyl blinds if you use the garage and want the daylight, frosted privacy film if it is storage and you want the privacy to be permanent. Both tolerate dust, cold and heat far better than fabric, and both cost very little.

How do I stop people seeing into my garage?

Frosted film on the glass is the only option that works in both directions at all hours and cannot be left open by accident. A blind works during the day and stops working the moment you switch a light on inside at night, because the brightness difference reverses.

Can you put blinds on a garage window with no frame?

Not with standard brackets. Use film on the glass, a no-tools shade that attaches with adhesive clips to the glazing bead, or mount outside the opening with proper masonry anchors. Never hang a heavy blind from an anchor set in soft mortar.

Will a blind make my garage warmer?

Barely. A slatted blind is an open structure that traps no air, and a garage loses far more heat through an uninsulated door and walls than through one small window. If warmth is the goal, the window covering is the last item on the list rather than the first.

What survives a cold, dusty garage?

Vinyl, faux wood and film. Vinyl is the most forgiving: it does not swell, it does not mind the cold, and it can be washed in water when it gets filthy. Paper shades crease and their adhesive lets go through a temperature swing; fabric shades hold dust and cannot be properly cleaned.
