The window width plus 8 to 12 inches, so the rod extends 4 to 6 inches past the frame on each side. That gives open panels somewhere to stack off the glass and gives closed panels the overlap that stops light at the edges. Table by window size in what size curtain rod do I need.

The combined width of all your panels should be 2 to 2.5 times the window width — 2.5 to 3 times for sheers. A 48-inch window wants roughly 96 to 120 inches of total panel. Buying panels sized to the window is the single most common mistake in this category.

The rod. The drop is measured from where the rod will sit down to where you want the hem, and since the rod is 4 to 6 inches above the frame, the panel needs to be that much longer than the window opening.

Neither term is regulated. In practice blackout aims at true darkness and room darkening aims at a comfortable dusk you can still see in. Hold the fabric up to a bright lamp: a blackout weave shows nothing, a room-darkening one glows evenly.

Partially, and much less than listings imply. Heavy fabric absorbs some high-frequency sound and reduces echo inside the room. It does almost nothing for traffic rumble or bass, because stopping low-frequency sound needs mass and an airtight seal that no curtain provides.

Slats up — the rounded edge pointing upward — blocks the sightline from below, which is the street. Slats down blocks the view from above. Most ground-floor windows are left the wrong way round.

Through anything translucent, yes. Privacy depends on which side is brighter, so sheers, solar screens and light-filtering shades all reverse once your lamps are on. Only opaque coverings and frosted film work after dark.

Hold a lit candle or a smoking incense stick along the frame on a windy day. Sideways movement means an air leak to seal; a steady flame beside a cold area means a cold surface to cover. They need completely different fixes.

Four ways, in order of what they hold: tap-in brackets on wooden trim, a floor-to-ceiling tension pole, a tension rod inside the recess, and adhesive brackets on smooth paint. Match the mount to the weight of your curtains, not the other way round.

The span is too wide for the rod, the curtains are too heavy, or the recess is painted in gloss and the rubber ends cannot grip. Painter's tape or rubber pads at the contact points fix the grip problem for pennies.

Close to it, with two layers: a cut-to-size cordless blackout shade inside the recess plus a curtain in front of it. An inside-mounted shade always leaks at the edges, so one layer never gets there on its own.

Close the slats flat, wipe from the top down with a slightly damp microfibre cloth, and support each slat from behind with your other hand. Unsupported wiping bends slats, and a bent slat never sits flat again.

Usually not. Pull the bottom rail fully down and release — that resets the spring on many mechanisms. If it persists, increase the tension at the headrail adjuster a quarter turn at a time. Never lubricate it; cordless lifts hold position by friction.
