Insulated curtains vs window film
Film performs better and looks worse. Curtains look better and perform worse. Most cold rooms want both.

Shrink-film insulation kits create a genuine second sealed air gap across the whole window, which is a more effective thermal upgrade than any curtain. Insulated curtains add a removable fabric layer in front of the glass, which looks like furnishing rather than like a science project. On performance per dollar, film wins comfortably. On living with it, curtains win.
This comparison is really about single glazing. On modern double or triple glazing, film's marginal benefit shrinks a lot and the case for it weakens; on an old single-glazed sash it is the highest-return thing you can do short of replacing the window.

Deciding
Choose film if…
- The window is single glazed, where the gain is largest.
- You want the biggest thermal improvement for the least money and will accept how it looks.
- The room is one you do not show visitors — a spare room, a utility room, a north-facing bedroom.
- You do not need to open that window in winter.
- You rent: film goes on and comes off without touching the fabric of the building.

Choose insulated curtains if…
- You want the window to look furnished rather than sealed.
- You need to open the window in winter — for ventilation, or because it is a fire escape route.
- You also want light control, privacy or darkness, which film gives you none of.
- The glazing is already reasonably modern, where film's extra gap adds little.
- You want something that works year round without a seasonal ritual.
What changes
The cost and effort reality
Film is the cheapest intervention discussed anywhere on this site, and the effort is concentrated: an afternoon of cleaning frames, applying double-sided tape, stretching film and shrinking it with a hairdryer. Done well it is nearly invisible from across the room; done badly it wrinkles and you see it every time you walk in.
Curtains cost more and the effort is front-loaded into hanging a rod, after which there is nothing to do. They also earn their keep in ways film cannot — darkness, privacy, sound absorption, and a room that looks finished.

The catch: The coating is the failure point: it stiffens along fold lines and does not tolerate a hot wash or a tumble dryer. Expect a shorter life than an uncoated weave.

FAQ
Questions people actually ask
Does window insulation film actually work?
On single glazing, yes, and noticeably — it creates a sealed second air gap across the whole pane, which is the same principle as double glazing at a fraction of the cost. On modern double glazing the additional benefit is small.
Can I open the window with film on it?
No. The film seals across the frame, so the window is closed for the season. That rules it out on any window you need for ventilation or as an escape route.
Does film damage the paintwork?
The double-sided tape can lift paint when removed, especially from older or poorly-adhered paintwork. Remove it slowly, and warming the tape with a hairdryer first makes it release much more cleanly.
Which saves more energy?
Film, on single glazing, by a clear margin. On double glazing the two are closer and curtains have the advantage of working every night without a seasonal application.
Is film worth it on double glazing?
Usually not for thermal reasons alone. The second gap adds less when there is already one, and the appearance cost stays the same. Spend the effort on sealing air leaks and hanging curtains properly instead.
