Best curtains on Amazon
The listings are endless and the products are not. Here are the panel types that actually differ, and which problem each one solves.
By Janet H. · Last updated October 11, 2026 · How we choose

If you want one answer: NICETOWN Thermal Insulated Blackout Curtains are the panel to buy for a bedroom that is too bright, because they come in a wider ladder of drops than almost anything else — including the 108-inch length a near-ceiling rod needs — and the triple weave has no coating to crack. For a bright room you do not want to darken, the Deconovo faux linen sheers do the opposite job properly.
Shopping for curtains on Amazon is a search-results problem rather than a product problem. There are thousands of listings and perhaps six genuinely different things being sold: a coated blackout panel, an uncoated triple-weave blackout panel, a lined decorative panel, a separate liner, a thermal panel with a reflective backing, and a sheer. Work out which of those six your window needs and the listing count stops mattering.

Before the list
Start with the problem, not the panel
Each of the six types exists for a different complaint, and buying across the boundary is where people end up disappointed. Too bright at 5am wants an opaque panel and, more importantly, a rod mounted wide and high. Glare on a screen wants a sheer, because a blackout panel just makes the room unusable. Cold air off the glass wants a lined panel long enough to reach the floor. A street light wants mass plus coverage at the edges. A room that looks washed out wants a lined decorative panel where the liner does the work and the face fabric does the looking.
If you are not sure which problem you have, the five-second test is in do blackout curtains work: stand in the dark room and look at the window. A bright halo tracing the frame is an edge-leak problem and no fabric will fix it. A panel that glows evenly is a fabric problem and a better panel will.
One more thing to settle before you add anything to a cart: the header. Grommet panels slide easily and leave open gaps between the grommets that light comes straight through. Rod pocket panels gather tightly and do not slide. Back-tab panels hang flat against the wall and close the top gap best. Grommet vs rod pocket vs pleated has the full comparison.

Thermal Insulated Blackout Curtains
NICETOWN
Triple-weave polyester with no coating to crack or peel, machine washable, and sold in a wider ladder of drops than most ranges — including the 108-inch length a near-ceiling rod needs.
Who it’s for: The default bedroom panel, and the one to buy if you are mounting the rod properly high and need the extra length to still reach the floor.
The catch: The grommet header holds the panel an inch off the wall with open gaps between grommets, so light still comes over the top. Add a pelmet, or choose a back-tab version, if that is your problem.

02 — Best looking
100% Blackout Curtains with black liner
Deconovo
A decorative face fabric with a black liner sewn behind it, so the liner does the light blocking and the room-side color can be pale without giving up darkness. One product, two layers, hung on one rod.
Who it’s for: Living rooms and bedrooms where a flat black-backed panel would look like a hotel, and you want the curtain to be part of the room.
The catch: Two bonded layers make it bulky. It stacks wide when open, so it needs wall space beside the window and a rod with a center support on a wide span.

03 — Best for a bright room
Faux linen sheer curtains
Deconovo
A faux-linen voile that scatters a hard directional beam into soft ambient light. It is the opposite purchase to a blackout panel and the right one if the complaint is harshness rather than brightness.
Who it’s for: Living rooms, home offices and any window where the room should stay light but the sun should stop landing on a screen or a sofa.
The catch: No privacy after dark — once your lights are on, a sheer shows the room clearly from outside. It is a daytime layer that needs something behind it for the evening.

04 — Best upgrade to curtains you own
Blackout Curtain Liners with detachable rings
NICETOWN
A separate blackout layer that hangs behind curtains you already have, on rings that clip to the existing header. It upgrades the panels rather than replacing them, and it comes off for washing.
Who it’s for: Anyone who likes their curtains and only wants them darker, and renters who would rather not replace a landlord's fittings.
The catch: It adds real weight to the rod. On a marginal rod with end brackets only, adding a liner is what makes it start to bow.

05 — Best for heat
Thermal Insulated Blackout Curtains, silver backed
Deconovo
A silver-tone thermal coating facing the glass reflects solar radiation back out before the fabric can absorb it — the mechanism that separates a genuinely heat-rejecting panel from a merely heavy one.
Who it’s for: West-facing rooms that become unusable in July, and anyone whose dark blackout panel is making the afternoon worse rather than better.
The catch: The coating is the failure point: it stiffens along fold lines and does not tolerate a hot wash or a tumble dryer. Expect a shorter life than an uncoated weave.

Buying guide
What actually matters
Buy single panels, and buy them all at once
Dye lots differ between production batches, so a panel ordered three months later rarely matches the first two. Buying single panels rather than pairs also lets you hit an odd number, which a wide window frequently needs. Order every panel for one window in one go. How many curtain panels do I need does the fullness arithmetic.
The drop is the spec people get wrong
Curtain length is measured from the rod, not from the top of the window, and the rod should be well above the frame. That is why 84-inch panels are too short in so many rooms and why the availability of a 96 or 108-inch drop matters more than almost any fabric property. Curtain length guide and how high to hang curtains between them give you the number to order.
Care labels, because coatings do not survive laundry
An uncoated triple-weave panel machine washes and keeps working. A silver or foam-backed thermal panel does not: the coating stiffens along fold lines, cracks, and eventually flakes. If the panel will be washed more than once a year — a kid's room, a kitchen-adjacent window, a house with a dog — buy uncoated and accept slightly less thermal performance.
What the photos do not tell you
Listing photos are styled on rods mounted at ceiling height with four panels on a narrow window, which is why the curtains in the picture look fuller than yours will. Fullness is width of fabric divided by width of window, and 2 to 2.5 times is what makes a panel read as a curtain rather than a flat sheet. Two standard panels on a 96-inch window is roughly 1.1 times — the single most common reason new curtains look wrong.
Methodology
How we chose
Selection is on published construction and materials, the range of drops offered, care instructions, and the failure patterns that recur in owner feedback — coatings that crack, dye lots that do not match, grommets that tear. We do not lab-test panels and publish no light-blocking percentage of our own. Methodology.
FAQ
Questions people actually ask
What are the best curtains to buy on Amazon?
For a bedroom that is too bright, an uncoated triple-weave blackout panel in a drop long enough for a high-mounted rod. For a bright room you want to keep bright, a faux linen sheer. For a room that already has curtains you like, a separate blackout liner. The panel type matters far more than the brand.
Are expensive curtains worth it?
Past a fairly low threshold, no — what you are paying for is fabric weight and finishing rather than performance. The two things genuinely worth spending on are a long enough drop and an uncoated weave that survives washing. A well-mounted cheap panel outperforms a badly mounted expensive one every time.
How many curtain panels do I need?
Enough combined panel width to make 2 to 2.5 times the window width. A 96-inch window therefore wants roughly 192 to 240 inches of panel — three or four standard panels, not two. Buy singles so you can hit an odd number and order them together so the dye lot matches.
Do blackout curtains really block all the light?
The fabric can. The installation usually does not — light comes over the top, around the sides and under the hem long before it comes through the weave. Mounting the rod 8 to 12 inches wider than the window and close to the ceiling does more than any upgrade in fabric.
What length curtains should I order?
Measure from where the rod will actually go — close to the ceiling, not just above the frame — down to the floor, then order the next size up and let them just touch. That is usually 96 inches in a standard room and 108 in a tall one, which is why those two drops matter more than the fabric spec.
