Blackout aims at darkness; room darkening aims at dusk. In practice a blackout fabric is built to stop essentially all light passing through it, while room darkening reduces it to a comfortable dimness you can still see in. Neither term is regulated by any standard body, so the label alone does not guarantee either result — the construction does.
That is the whole distinction, and it explains the confusion: a manufacturer can describe the same fabric either way and nobody is checking. What you can check is how the fabric is built, and that is a reliable signal.

The lamp test is the practical one and it works in a store or at home: hold the fabric up to a bright bulb. A true blackout fabric shows nothing — the bulb disappears. A room-darkening fabric shows an even glow with the bulb's shape faintly visible. This is far more reliable than anything in the product description.

Choose blackout if…
- You or a child wake with the light and it costs you sleep.
- You work nights and sleep through daylight hours.
- There is a streetlight, security light or headlight path onto the window.
- It is a media room and you want the screen to be the brightest thing in it.
- The room faces east and you are dealing with a June sunrise.

- You want the room dimmer, not dark — a living room where you still read by daylight.
- It is a nursery used for daytime naps and you would rather not have a pitch-black room at noon.
- The window is decorative and the covering is mostly about how the room looks.
- You are covering a window you look out of often and want the covering to feel light, not heavy.
- Glare is the real complaint — in which case what you actually want is on the glare hub.
What changes
The cost and effort reality
Blackout fabric usually costs a little more than room darkening in the same range, but the meaningful cost difference is not the fabric — it is the mounting. Room darkening is forgiving: an inside-mounted shade or a curtain hung roughly where the window is will produce the dimness you wanted. Blackout is unforgiving, because a half-inch gap at the edge undoes the fabric entirely. Achieving real blackout usually means a wider rod, a higher mount and often a second layer.
So the honest way to frame the decision is not "how dark do you want it" but "how much installation are you willing to do". If the answer is "hang a curtain on the existing rod", buy room darkening and be happy with it. Buying blackout and mounting it like room darkening produces a blackout-priced room-darkening result, which is the outcome nobody wants.
